Oct. 22 Weekend hockey roundup: Seven in a row for Falcons; Blackhawks split; Mudcats win first game
The St. Catharines Falcons rolled a seven Sunday in Pelham.
The Falcons defeated the Pelham Panthers 5-2 for their seventh straight victory in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action.
The Falcons are now 8-3 after winning just one of their first four games.
Former Panther Dillon Lamarche stopped 16 of 18 shots in goal for the Falcons.
Xavier Drummond led the offence with a pair of goals while Jacob Roach, Jaleel Adams and Dawson added singles.
Brodie Thoms and Curtis Emery scored for the Panthers who fell to 9-5.
St. Catharines outshot Pelham 32-18.
The Falcons visit the Thorold Blackhawks Thursday and host Welland Friday.
Blackhawks 8 Regals 5
Brendan Charlton netted a hat trick and also added two assists to lead visiting Thorold Blackhawks past the Lockport Regals Saturday night.
Austin Jensen, Nick Gidney, Trevor Neumann, Bailey Stumpo and Sam VanderZalm added singles.
Alex Stinis and Tim Lopez replied for the Regals who fell to 1-11.
The Blackhawks also dropped a 4-2 decision at Welland Sunday.
Jason Horvat, Kellan Rosenbaum, Cody Wall and Matt Baumann scored for Welland, which improved to 3-9.
The Hawks, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-7, got goals from Trevor Neumann and Cody Thibodeau.
JUNIOR C
The Niagara Riverhawks let a 3-1 lead slip away as they watched the visiting Dunnville Mudcats collect a 4-3 win for their first victory of the season Thursday night in Provincial Junior Hockey League action.
The Mudcats entered the game winless in their first nine games. The Riverhawks record is now 6-5.
Both teams exchanged first period goals as Carter Leroux opened the scoring for the Riverhawks before the Mudcats tied it with a late goal by Jakob Murdoch with only 12 secs remaining in the period.
The Riverhawks opened up a 3-1 lead by the midway mark of the second on goals by Tyler Seguin and Nick Volpatti.
The Mudcats rallied scoring two goals in the last half of the period to tie the game at 3-3 after 40 minutes of play. Noah Czyzewski then scored the game winner at 1:58 of the third.
The Riverhawks outshot the Mudcats 46-30 with Dylan Matos making 26 saves in the loss. Dunnville’s Dalton McBride made 43 saves in the win including 16 in the third period.
“We weren’t prepared tonight. You can’t just show up and expect to get two points against anyone in this league,” Riverhawks coach Tim Barath said.
Riverhawks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Glanbrook before returning home on Thursday night to take on the Port Dover Sailors.
