Oct. 29 Niagara College report: Seven local soccer players named OCAA all-stars
Seven local soccer players from Niagara College were named Ontario Colleges Athletic Association all-stars.
Given an all-star nod from Niagara’s women’s team were Michelle Maecker, Kara Latham, Lauren Frasca and Sophia Al-Kayed while male Niagara College players earning all-star awards included Jordi Amores, Quinton Leone and Oti Frigole.
Maecker, a Fonthill native, followed up her rookie of the year award last season with all-star recognition. She led Niagara in scoring with seven goals and became the all-time leader with 11 goals.
Welland’s Latham has become one of the top midfielders in the OCAA. The Welland Centennial graduate and Niagara captain has a reputation as a player opponents don’t want to go up against and she also contributed offensively with two goals.
Frasca of St. Catharines and a Notre Dame graduate, was a shutdown defender for a Niagara team which allowed only 16 goals this season.
Al-Kayed, a St. Catharines native and Saint Francis grad, had a strong rookie season in the midfield and contributed a goal.
Amores from St. Catharines was selected an OCAA all-star for the fourth time. The Holy Cross graduate has the ability to control the game on both sides of the ball and his spectacular footwork consistently allows him evades defenders and create opportunities for his forwards. The team captain played the entire contest in almost all of Niagara’s games this season.
Leone, a fourth-year player from Niagara Falls, was named an all-star for the first time. The A.N. Myer graduate became one of the top defenders in the OCAA and helped Niagara record four shutouts.
Frigole, a St. Catharines native and Governor Simcoe grad, had an excellent rookie season. His 11 goals set the program’s single season scoring record.
At the OCAA soccer championships, Niagara’s men opened with a 7-1 loss to Humber and then were eliminated following a 4-0 setback versus the University of Toronto Mississauga. Frigole netted the lone goal.
Competing in their first-ever OCAA championships, Niagara’s women also went 0-2, falling 2-1 to Durham and 3-0 against Algonquin. Maecker headed in the lone Niagara goal on a pass from Latham.
VAN’S THE MAN
Men’s basketball player Van Hutchinson Jr. was named the Niagara College Male Athlete of the Week.
The native of Nassau, Bahamas, had 25 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and two blocks to spark Niagara to a 91-75 road victory over the Conestoga Condors
Also helping Niagara improve to 2-0 on the season were: Ridley College product Livingston Bromwell, 16 points and 11 rebounds; Jordon McDonald, 14 points; Alex Elliott, eight points and six rebounds; and, Keveshan Padachey, seven points.
Niagara’s men host Humber Thursday at 8 p,m. and are at Mohawk Saturday.
The Knights women’s basketball squad saw its record fall to 1-1 following a 57-38 loss to Conestoga. Top performers for Niagara were: Thorold’s Hannah Baker, 10 points; Welland’s Bridget Atkinson, eight steals, six assists, four points and four rebounds; Holy Cross grad Tia Stys, 12 rebounds and four points; Haley Reynolds, six points and eight rebounds; Niagara Falls native Rysa Delmundo, six points and five rebounds; and, Alannah Yates, five points and nine rebounds.
Niagara’s women host Humber Thursday at 6 p,m. and are at Mohawk Saturday.
KOSLOWSKI TOP FEMALE
Hamilton native Jordan Koslowski was honoured as the Niagara College Female Athlete of the Week.
The fourth-year outside hitter led the Knights to a 3-2 [25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 21-25, 15-12] road victory over the Conestoga Condors
Koslowski had 27 points on 22 kills, three blocks, and two service aces. On the defensive side, she recorded 12 digs.
Also contributing to the Niagara (1-1) win were: Olivia Burnie, 12 kills and 14 points; and, rookie setter Montanna Taylor of St. Catharines had 37 assists and three kills.
Niagara’s men’s volleyball squad fell to 0-2 on the season after a 3-2 [28-26, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 12-15] defeat to the Conestoga Condors.
Top performers for Niagara were: Jaydon Milne, 16 kills and adding 18 digs; St. Catharines’ Micah Nieuwets, 14 kills and five digs; and, St. Catharines’ Mitch Sawatsky, 10 kills to his team’s effort.
NIAGARA CROSS COUNTRY
Niagara’s men’s cross country team placed 15th at the OCAA championship.
Results included David Ahong (57th), Peter Van Den Bos (58th), Janik Luehrs (63rd), Malachi Clark (78th), Josh Turner (80th) and Chris Vonlanthen (85th)
Niagara’s Shannon Rotteveel placed 67th in the women’s race.
