Oct. 7 Niagara Generals report
Cameron Macrae ran for three majors and running back Marco Angelini added a pair of touchdowns to power the Niagara Generals under-14 football team to a 48-6 victory over Scarborough in Ontario Fall Football League action.
Also scoring for the Generals were: Calam Smith with a rushing TD: Ben Parker with a touchdown reception; and, kicker Mateo Ayala with six converts.
“This (past) Sunday, the Generals came out with something to prove throughout the past week. We made some changes which proved to be beneficial,” coach Bruce Macrae said. “Our athletes came out making all their blocks, holding the line and finishing tackles. It was not just kids playing football together, it was athletes playing football as a team.”
Niagara’s defence backed up Scarborough’s offence and made it punt on fourth and 25 on multiple occasions.
“I could not be more proud of our team’s performance,” Macrae said.
Next up for the Generals (1-3) is an Oct. 17 road game against Burlington (4-0).
UNDER-12 GENERALS
The Niagara Generals peewee (under 12) improved to 3-0 in OFFL action with a 36-6 romp over the Sarnia Sturgeons.
Scoring majors for the Generals were Spencer Macrae, Lox Raducanu, Dyami Maphar, Henley Shore and John McGillen. Two two-point converts were scored by Spencer Macrae and a single two-point convert was added by Henley Shore.
“The final score is not an accurate representation of the game,” Generals coach Kent Wakem said. “Sarnia is a tough opponent and it could have gone either way at any time. We had to deal with an onslaught of rain for the entire game and it became a lesson in ball security. Our players won that battle on Saturday.”
The game was a hard-hitting defensive battle and there were multiple injuries on both teams.
“Thankfully none of the injuries were serious. We look forward to the rematch at home next week,” Wakem said. “We have a lot of preparation to do this week while we nurse our wounds and hopefully will see the field with a full roster.
“As COVID is becoming an issue in the elementary schools, we need to take it one day at a time and prepare all our players for multiple positions.”
Niagara hosts Sarnia Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kiwanis Field.
UNDER-10 GENERALS
The Niagara Generals under-10 squad dropped to 1-2 in OFFL play following a 22-12 loss to the Brantford Bisons.
Jake Brewster recorded a pair of majors for the Generals while Anthony D’Andreamatteo and Greyson Maffei played key roles on defence.
“The game was a back and forth battle all the way to the end,” coach Andrew Lewis said. “Our offence really controlled the game. We had ball possession about 80 per cent of the game.”
Niagara was hurt by turnovers, including a fumble deep in Brantford territory with about four minutes left in the game.
“We can’t stress enough to our guys the importance of ball protection. It’s something we work on every week in practice,” Lewis said. “The coaching staff had a good meeting with our guys after the game and we are putting this one behind us and looking towards a bounce back game when we take on Guelph.”
