The Niagara College Knights men’s volleyball team improved to 2-0 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play with a 3-1 victory (25-18, 24-26, 25-10 and 26-24) over the Conestoga Condors.
Top performers for Niagara were: Noah Trembly with an assist and 10 digs; Ashton Nieuwets with 20 points, 14 kills, an assist, four service aces, three digs and two blocks; and, Rowan Redekop with nine points, six kills, two digs and three blocks.
Niagara is at the Mohawk Mountaineers Wednesday at 8 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Niagara’s women’s volleyball team matched their male counterparts by pushing its record to 2-0 with a 3-1 victory (25-21, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-16) over the Conestoga Condors.
Leading the way for Niagara were: Natalie Little with 13 points, two service aces, seven digs, two assists and 11 kills; Emilie Dlouhy with three assists and 12 digs; and, Abbey Gooder with 14 points, 11 kills, three assists, three blocks and 13 digs.
For her performance, Little was named Niagara College’s Female Athlete of the Week.
“Natalie provided consistency for the Knights in their 3-1 win over the Conestoga Condors Wednesday evening. She was all over the court, keeping the play alive and helping her team to victory. Natalie made some clutch plays at crucial moments, showcasing not only her skill and talent but also her incredible game sense,” a college press release said.
Niagara is at the Mohawk Mountaineers Wednesday at 6 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Twenty-one points, 13 rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block by Raheem Dennis helped the Niagara College men’s basketball team even its OCAA record at 1-1 with a 78-64 victory over the Conestoga Condors.
Dennis was named Niagara College’s Male Athlete of the Week for his impressive outing.
“Raheem stepped up big in the absence of fellow injured starter and scored more than one quarter of the team’s total points in Friday evening’s 78-64 win over the Conestoga Condors,” a college press release said.
Also contributing for the Knights were: Kadin Moore with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals; and, Skylar Samuel with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
“We got off to a slow start but once we found our rhythm we took control of the game for the final three quarters. With our captain (Khayden Stewart) out, we had guys step up and contribute huge for our first win,” head coach Lequan Hylton said.
Niagara hosts Sheridan Saturday at 2 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Niagara’s women’s basketball team (2-0) remained unbeaten in OCAA action with a 63-46 romp over the Conestoga Condors.
Performing well for Niagara were: Janee Harrison with 17 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a block; Jamira Rousseau with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block; and, Aisja Strachan with 13 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
“It was a good team win at Conestoga where our depth played an important role,” Niagara head coach Kimbal Mackenzie said. “Give Conestoga credit as they played tough the whole game.”
Strachan was named her team’s player of the game for her performance.
“We started off the game great, came out strong and got an early lead. As the game went on, we struggled a little getting stops and taking care of the ball but quickly adjusted and performed when we needed to,” Strachan said. “As a team, I feel like we showed that no matter what, we can keep persevering and get the job done. Proud of us for starting out the season strong going 2-0 and looking to make it 3-0 this weekend.”
Niagara hosts Sheridan Bruins Saturday at noon.
