Parker impresses for Team Ontario
Corrynn Parker made an impressive debut at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games Monday.
The 17-year-old Fenwick resident, who is a power forward with the Niagara Prep girls team, hit a couple of three-point shots in the first half to finish with six points as Team Ontario topped Prince Edward Island 95-47 at Niagara College.
“It’s really exciting, especially with it being in my home region,” Parker said, before hitting the hardwood. “My family can come and I’m super excited to play for this team.
“We have a good team. I really like the coaching staff so it’s been a good experience.”
Parker did not start Monday but quickly came off the bench as the Team Ontario coaching staff used the bench liberally in their Games debut.
“We do have a lot of good players so we’re going to try and share the ball as much as we can and really get it to the hoop,” Parker said.
Parker is eager to see the level of competition.
“I have no idea, especially with COVID for the last two years, you don’t know what people have been doing behind the scenes,” she said. “We’re doing what we can to be prepared.”
Parker, a former Saint-Jean-de-Brebeuf student, won an Ontario Basketball Association Division 1 gold medal for the second time in 2018 and a Juel Prep championship in 2019, quickly fit in with her new teammates following a week of training camp at Greater Fort Erie Secondary School.
“It was really fun, especially staying in dorms with each other and getting to know each other really quickly and we’ve already become really close,” said Parker, a 5-foot-10 swing player.
Parker, who competed in the Junior NBA World Championships in Florida four years ago, enjoyed the Opening Ceremony Saturday night at the Meridian Centre.
“The opening ceremonies were great. We were able to be the first team from Ontario to walk into. It was a really great experience with so many people there.
Pelham’s Sarah Hurley added three points for Team Ontario.
Team Ontario play Team Manitoba Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Meridian Centre.
