Pelham tournament begins Friday
Six of the eight teams in the Golden Horseshoe Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League will be in action at the Doug Burr Tournament beginning Friday in Pelham.
The host Pelham Panthers, Caledonia Corvairs, St. Catharines Falcons, Thorold Blackhawks, Niagara Falls Canucks, Fort Erie Meteors and Hamilton Kilty B’s will be participating. Hamilton has entered two teams, the Freight Navigators and the Avalanche. Caledon will also have two teams participating.
Panthers owner Tim Toffolo is looking forward to seeing the teams back in action.
“This is going to be the first junior hockey in the peninsula where fans can actually come and sit down and watch a game in the last 18 months,” Toffolo said. “It’s pretty exciting. I think its going to be exciting for a lot of people knowing they can go to an arena and watch some good hockey again.
“Let’s just hope this is going to be what we will be doing for a long time now.”
Toffolo said fans will be required to register at the gate and will have to maintain social distancing and wear a mask other than when eating or drinking. As well, all players and staff will be required to wear a mask. Players will not be required to wear a mask when playing.
“We’re all in the same boat. We’re all trying to prevent any infection and spread of this,” Toffolo said. “We all have to do our part.”
Games will be three, 15-minute periods stop time with a flood after every second period.
Day passes are $10 with weekend passes priced at $20.
