Petes clip IceDogs in overtime
Overtime continues to bring out the worst in the Niagara IceDogs.
The IceDogs dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Peterborough Petes Friday night on home ice, the fourth time this season the club has lost in extra time.
Jax Dubois won it for the Petes just 19 seconds into the fourth period when he fired a shot past Niagara goaltender Owen Flores, who made 53 saves overall.
“Obviously, it’s pretty frustrating but we have three (games) in three (days) this weekend and we just have to wash it and be back tomorrow,” Niagara forward Kevin He said.
He said puck possession is critical in overtime.
“That’s the main key during overtime, just trying to stay away from the other guys on the opposing team and keep the puck and control and play from there.”
The IceDogs got off to a strong start, quickly opening the scoring with a power-play goal from Zak Lavoie just 1:13 into the first. Rookie Ryan Roobroeck then gave the IceDogs a 2-0 lead just over three minutes later.
Peterborough got one back late in the first and then took total control of the game in the second, scoring twice with the man advantage.
“I think we have to keep shooting pucks and getting to the net,” He said. “We need three periods and a 60-minute game.”
The IceDogs battled back in the third and finally tied the score at 3-3 when Andrew Vermeulen scored his first Ontario Hockey League goal at the 13:04 mark.
The Petes outshot the IceDogs 53-36 and peppered Flores with 26 shots in the first period alone.
“A lot (of shots) were on the power (play) and that’s something we can fix,” He said.
The IceDogs, 2-4-4, are in Windsor Saturday where the Spitfires are off to a 3-8 start. The club then travels to Sarnia Sunday afternoon to play the Sting, who are 6-5.
Ice cubes: Bronson Ride, Evan Klein, Ivan Galiyanov and William Stewart did not dress for the IceDogs . . .
