Phoenix, Thunder, Flyers, Gryphons prevail
The Saint Francis Phoenix, Blessed Trinity Thunder, Greater Fort Erie Gryphons and Eden Flyers were all victorious Monday in opening-round action at the 60th Annual Standard High School Basketball Tournament.
The tournament continues with quarter-final action Tuesday.
Below are sumamries of the four games:
PHOENIX 85 SAINTS 19
Jack Ciocca poured in 18 points to lead the No. 1 seed Phoenix past the 16th-seeded St. Catharines College Saints.
Also scoring for the Phoenix were Carter MacNeil 13, Awab Ali 11, Austin Hinds 9, Nolan Freel 8, Andrew Ens 8, Trent Dobson 6, Ian Allas 4, Farouk Akasha 4, Nawaf Kigab 3 and Jakob Labanowicz 2.
Scoring for the Saints were Sean Hill 14, Kadmiel Patrong 2, Aerfate Rehemutula 2 and Kevin Gumiran 1.
The Cat’s Caboose Player of the Game was Saint Francis’ Jack Ciocca while the Boston Pizza Player of the Game was Collegiate’s Sean Hill.
THUNDER 81 TIGERS 74
Michael Akinpetide canned 40 points to lead the eighth-seeded Blessed Trinity Thunder past the ninth-seeded Ridley College Tigers.
Also scoring for the Thunder were Caleb Olomide 25, Jamie Coldwell 7, Matteo Pesut 4, Danijel Skrban 2 and Matteo Villella 1.
Scoring for the Tigers were Felix Hadzic 22, Parker Emanoilidis 21, Amr Fayed 10, Michael Creglia 6, Pranav Wadhawan 6, Nick Nymbill 4, Rafael Cokcan 3, Luka Jankovic 3.
The Cat’s Caboose Player of the Game was Blessed Trinity’s Akenpetide while the Boston Pizza Player of the Game was Ridley’s Hadzic.
FLYERS 76 RAIDERS 45
Chad Thorpe netted 26 points to lead the second-seeded Eden Flyers to a 76-45 victory over the 15th-seeded Holy Cross Raiders.
Also scoring for the Flyers were Kai Schatz 14, Dylan Durlov 12, Luke Johnson 9, Josh Sanecki 8, Bennett O’Connor 2, Noah Whyte 2 and Xavier Moccio 2.
Scoring for the Raiders were Joey Young 12, Durico Wynter 7, Owen Bradford-Andrew 5, Terrell Wallace 4, Joseph Martinelli 4, Nathan Beveridge 3, Daniel Orr 3, Matteo D’Aria 3, Ferdinand Reimmer 2 and Owen Corcoran 1.
The Cat’s Caboose Player of the game was Eden’s Johnson while the Boston Pizza Player of the Game was Holy Cross’s Beveridge.
GRYPHONS 64 PATRIOTS 44
Twenty-one points from Nate Jones helped the seventh-ranked Greater Fort Erie Gryphons open the Standard tournament Monday with a 64-44 victory over the 10th-seeded Laura Secord Patriots.
Also scoring for the Gryphons were Noah Gmoser 15, Carter Reichel 9, Jason Currie 7, Korde Hill 3, Aiden Storring 2, Jack Storring 2, Cade Tyrell 2, Bo Train 2, Nick Alix 2.
Scoring for the Patriots were Travis Joyce 17, Lucas Andres 10, Abdi Farah 8, Luken Mignault 3, Nick Hatrick 2, Angelo Dulak 2 and Abdul Suliman 2.
The Cat’s Caboose Player of the game was GFESS’s Jones while the Boston Pizza Player of the Game was Secord’s Joyce.
