Port Colborne High School athletic award winners

Emma Laur and Matteo Panunte were named Port Colborne High School’s senior female and male athletes of the year at the school’s recent athletic banquet.

Junior female and male athletes of the year were Mikayla Lacey and Logan Dickie.

Other major award winners were: Lucas denHollander, Junior Boy Sportsperson; Ava deWaard, Junior Girls Sportsperson; Dylan Coers, Senior Boys Sportsperson; Kayleigh Carter, Senior Girls Sportsperson; and, Emma Haywood, Blue Bear Award.

Below are the winners for specific sports:

Golf: Lacey, MVP.

Tennis: Laur and Cole Pelletier, MVPs.

Girls basketball: Maya Kolbinson, MVP; Sheridan Sneek, Leadership Award.

Junior boys volleyball: Alex McNay, MVP; Logan Dickie and Kolby Kulak, Coaches Awards.

Senior boys volleyball: Panunte, MVP; Noah Shoemaker, Coaches Award.

Cross-country: Eva Wachel.

Junior girls volleyball: Emma Graves, MVP; Lacey and Wachel, Coaches Awards.

Senior girls volleyball: Alyssa Young and Haywood.

Junior boys basketball: Jake Graham, MVP; Cole Istok, Most Improved.

Senior boys basketball: Caleb Grover, MVP; Ben Walker, Coaches Award.

Boys hockey: Owen White, MVP; Braeden Kish, Rookie of the Year: Connor Dobrin, Coaches Award.

Badminton: Laur and Coers, MVPs; Ash Reczynski, Most Improved.

Girls soccer: Kayleigh Carter, MVP; Addison Grano, Most Improved.

Boys soccer: Isaac deWaard, Offensive Award; Panunte, Defensive Award.

Ultimate: Sam Tonelli, Coers, Carter and Laur, MVPs.

Track and field: Grover, Senior MVP; Sam Tonnies, Junior MVP; Owen Robins, Most Improved.

Bernie Puchalski, a graduate of Brock University and Niagara College, worked in journalism in Niagara for more than 27 years before taking a voluntary buyout from The Standard at the end of 2016. He started his career as a news reporter for the Niagara Falls Review before switching to sports reporting. He was a sports reporter and sports editor at the Niagara Falls Review before joining the Standard's sports department in 1996. He was named the Standard's sports editor in 2000 and became the regional sports editor, in charge of the Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Standard, in 2015, a position he held until he left the company. During his time in newspapers, he was a multiple winner and finalist for numerous Ontario and Western Ontario Newspaper Awards for sports reporting, spot news reporting and humour writing. He was a member of the Standard Boys Basketball Tournament committee and co-chair of the Standard Girls Basketball Tournament, helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for bursaries presented to participants in the tournament. He also served on countless local sports committees both in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.
