Raiders romp to SOSSA crown
The Holy Cross Raiders dominated the opposition en route to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association senior boys AA soccer title Thursday.
The Raiders blanked McKinnon Park 5-0 in the semifinal before defeating Dundas Valley 7-1 in the SOSSA final at Kiwanis Field.
The Raiders now advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships next week in North Bay.
Holy Cross coach Marc Ferretti was thrilled with his club’s effort in both games.
“We controlled play from the beginning, which is what we wanted to do,” he said. “We really wanted to make a point of controlling the games early, and we did that.
“We were up by a couple of goals early in both games which is key for us.”
Sebastian Agudo scored three times in the final while Adrian Waszak, Connor Caroll, Altin Ibrahimi and Bruce DeLuca added singles.
In the semifinal, Ibrahimi netted two while Agudo, Carroll and DeLuca also scored. Maxwell Whitcomb earned the shutout.
“We have a lot of firepower, a lot of different guys who can score,” Ferretti said. “We have a couple of guys who score the majority, but any of those top five or six guys can score.
“Nobody can shut down one guy. We have a lot of answers.”
The Raiders were shooting for OFSSA since Day 1 this season.
“We built a program where that’s our goal,” Ferretti said. “The kids are pretty dedicated to it. They sacrifice a lot of time.
“I’m proud of them.”
The Raiders have now made it to OFSSA three years in a row and eight of the last 10 years and have one silver medal and six top-six finishes on their resume.
“The kids take it seriously,” Ferretti said. “It’s not an easy thing.
“We’re really proud to represent.”
