Raiders still perfect in flag football
The Holy Cross Raiders varsity girls flag football team continues to roll along.
This past Tuesday at Kalar Sports Park in Niagara Falls, the Raiders improved to 6-0 by defeating Saint Francis 40-27 and Saint Michael Team Two 26-6.
“It was business as usual for the Holy Cross girls flag football team which took to the field yesterday in a pair of tough matchups. The first matchup was against second-place Saint Francis and that game saw the Holy Cross girls fall quickly behind 19-0 in the first half. Down but not out, the girls kicked into high gear and scored 40 straight unanswered points for a big 40-26 victory. Caileigh Tiller connected with Charlotte Marotta early in the second half to start the comeback. Gracie Cherney and Chelsey Tiller found themselves each with an interception and returned for touchdown,” wrote Holy Cross coach Erin Gauthier. “The team carried that momentum into the second matchup against third-place Saint Michael’s and an outstanding defence led the girls to a 26-6 victory. Mia McAdam’s speed put a lot of pressure on the quarterback resulting in a couple sacks. Grace Vani contributed on offence at both the quarterback and receiver position. The girls will look to finish the season undefeated next week in their final regular season game.”
Following Holy Cross in the standings are Saint Paul (5-1), Saint Francis (4-2), Saint Michael Team Two (4-2), Blessed Trinity (2-4), Saint Michael (2-4), Denis Morris (1-5) and Lakeshore Catholic (0-4).
Scores of other games Tuesday were: Saint Paul 46 Denis Morris 14; Saint Michael 34 Blessed Trinity 22; Saint Michael Team Two 50 Lakeshore Catholic 6; Saint Francis 50 Denis Morris 20; Saint Paul 39 Saint Michael 19; and, Blessed Trinity 32 Lakeshore Catholic 7.
Denis Morris head coach Erin Clark described her team’s games as the toughest of the season.
“In the first game against Saint Paul, Angel Adeboye spurred on the defence with four convincing sacks, while Reese Praskey, Izzy Phengpacdy and Chloe Hutton puts points on the board for the offence. The girls really came together supporting each other as the game wound down,” she wrote. “They went on to take that energy into their next game against Saint Francis. Your Reds were the first to put points on the board against the much larger Phoenix team. Chloe Hutton dominated on both sides of the ball and claimed another two touchdowns. Reese Praskey picked up six points of her own and Izzy Phengpacdy ran in a dramatic two-point conversion. Alyssa Hutton, not to be outdone by her older sister, grabbed an interception late in the second half to keep DM in the game. Quarterback Danica Spicer orchestrated two offside penalties on the Saint Francis rusher with her knowledge of the game and superior play calling.”
Regular season action concludes next Wednesday at Kalar Sports Park.
