Redcoats advance to SOSSA
The old guard and the new wave were on display for the Governor Simcoe Redcoats Thursday.
Veteran guard Jamie Addy poured in 18 points while rookie Keira Teske added nine as the Redcoats defeated the Thorold Golden Eagles 45-27 in the Niagara Region High School Athletic Association AA final at Governor Simcoe.
The Redcoats now advance to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) playdowns next week in Hamilton.
Simcoe coach John Ingribelli couldn’t say enough about what Addy brings to the Redcoats.
“She’s a very skilled player, she’s almost like a second coach on the floor,” Ingribelli said. “She’s great with the girls. She’s patient, she helps the girls get better and better. We watched her and she communicates great with the girls along with the coaching staff.
“I think she’s one of the best girls in the province, I want to say top five, and she’s a blessing to coach.”
Teske, meanwhile, is a 14-year-old, Grade 9 student who plays club ball at the Niagara Juel Prep level.
“She’s really stepped up,” Ingribelli said. “She works hard. She’s very quiet, shows no emotions on the floor, so we’re trying to get her to play with a bit of an edge but she’s really taking her game to the next level.”
Teske is enjoying her first year at the high school level.
“It’s really exciting coming into school (ball),” she said. “Having a good mindset coming in to the games is what you need and high intensity and having a good attitude.”
Teske is happy to fill whatever role is asked of her.
“I’m there to play whatever I need to play, I’m there to fill in whatever I need to do, whatever the coaches say,” she said. “It’s been really fun with all these girls, coming in and meeting new people and playing with new girls.”
Teske is thrilled to be heading to SOSSA.
“It’s really exciting for my first year, definitely,” she said. “It makes me really excited for the years to come and I’m glad that this wasn’t my last game (this year).”
Ingribelli, who is assisted by Jill Stiefelmeyer and Scott Madole, set a goal of going to SOSSA back in September.
“I set for this team that we want to win zone and then roll the dice at SOSSA,” he said. “We set that goal right from beginning of season and the girls bought into our coaching style. They worked hard and they got better and better.
“We want to make some noise (at SOSSA). We don’t know who we play but we’re not satisfied just going there. We want to hopefully compete and play in the finals.”
Thorold head coach Andrew Thomson had no regrets.
“Yeah, it’s a great group of girls,” he said. “It’s not the end we wanted but they worked their butt off and you can see they’re pretty emotional and I’m very proud of them.
“Governor Simcoe are very well coached and we wish them all the best.”
Thomson feels the future is bright for Golden Eagles basketball.
“We have a pretty nice junior program going so we’re hoping that they kind of lay the foundation and they can help the build our staff for years to come.”
