First Boys Hockey
The Ridley Boys First Hockey Team took the ice for their season opener verse De La Salle in Toronto and emerged with an 8-7 victory.
The Tigers led by one following the second period and then fell behind in the third until Dylan Graff tied the game at 7-7. With just under two minutes to play, captain Owen Leach made a dazzling end-to-end rush that was capped off by a blocker side snipe to put Ridley in the lead.
Stellar goaltending by Sammy Rootes in the final minute allowed the Tigers to hold on and move to 1-0 on the season.
Leach and Sammy Rodriguez each had three goals while Graff and Lucas Wiley also scored.
Prep Boys Hockey
Prep Boys Hockey won two games and dropped another in a shootout in Midwest Prep Hockey League action over the weekend.
The Tigers topped Bishops College School 4-0, Rothesay Netherwood School 5-0 and dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to Rice Memorial.
The Tigers are now 25-9-2-1 overall.
Rylee Hlusiak led the way with four goals while Coleman Bennett and Brady Hildreth each had two.
Carlo Muraro and Tony Theodoropoulos each earned shutout wins.
“This was another solid weekend for us, earning five of a possible six league points,” coach Mike McCourt said. “The boys showed some resiliency in the third game, tying the game late by scoring two goals with the extra attacker.
“We’ve only got four games until the Christmas Break, including a big one at home on Wednesday against St. Andrews. Hopefully we can build off the momentum from this past weekend, and head into the break on a high note.”
Up Next: CISAA game Wednesday at 3 p.m. versus St. Andrews College at Ridley.
Prep Boys Basketball
The Prep Boys Basketball went deep in to the heartland of big time basketball this weekend to compete in the prestigious Zero Gravity Prep Classic in Barrington, Rhode Island. The event featured several of the top programs in New England as well as many of the top ranked teams in the United States.
The Tigers got off on the right foot behind another excellent performance by Cormac McMahon defeating Bridgeport Prep from Connecticut 71-62. From there the road grew much steeper facing two top programs in Northfield Mount Hermon (Massachusetts) and New Hampton (New Hampshire). The young Tigers had impressive runs in both games but were out matched overall by the NMH (75-44) and Husky (76-50) offences losing both matches.
The Tigers will now look to regroup for two important OSBA (Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association) road matches this week against Lincoln Prep (Hamilton) Tuesday and Excel Prep (Mississauga) Thursday before getting a well-deserved holiday rest.
