Prep Boys Basketball
The Prep Basketball Tigers continued to learn and build during what proved to be a challenging November week.
Tuesday the Orange and Black made their way to Father Henry Carr where the Tigers went toe to toe with the Crusaders before a late fourth quarter charge by the home side and an injury to senior Alex Root, which saw FHC hold court with a 90-76 final.
The Tigers turned their focus to the Thornlea Invitational where they went 1-1 in the preliminary round with a 85-68 win against London Basketball Academy and a 68-65 loss to Toronto Basketball Academy.
Senior John Avgousti took the lead with point guard Root on the sidelines and finished as the Tigers’ high scorer in both matches. In Sunday’s final tournament match, the Tigers spotted a potent Canada Top Flight Academy and 20-point lead before almost closing the gap to four with less than two minutes to play. Top Flight held on for the win 83-76. Kiano Heath led the Tigers’ bench with 17 points and Gabrielle Marcotullio was a second half spark in the comeback.
This young Ridley squad continues to get battle tested against great competition, and resilience and consistency are building inside the ranks.
Next Up: The Tigers continue their extended road trip at the Athletes Institute Black Tuesday at 6 p.m.
First Boys Basketball
First Boys placed fourth at CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools) in Sherbrooke, QC after dropping a 50-40 decision to St. Andrew’s in the bronze medal game.
The Tigers lost to UCC in semifinal action after defeating Grey’s Academy 55-37 and Fraser Academy 71-24.
First Girls Basketball
The Ridley College Girls Basketball team also participated in their respective CAIS national championships in Rothesay, New Brunswick.
Ridley’s top scorer in the tournament was Mikayla Itemuagbor, averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. On the defensive end, Abigail Davidson and Mia Kidd combined for double-digit steals every game. Ridley and Elmwood battled in one of the most exciting games of the tournament, with Ridley coming back from down nine points in the fourth quarter, earning a victory in overtime.
The Tigers defeated Stanstead College (Quebec) 42-28. Mikayla Itemuagbor (15 points, 12 rebounds) was the player of the game.
Ridley topped Elmwood School (Ottawa) 42-40 in overtime. Mowa Alabi (4 points, 18 rebounds, 4 steals) was the player of the game.
Ridley then doubled Grey Academy (Manitoba) 40-20. Keji Adeyemi (4 points, 15 rebounds, 2 steals was the player of the game.
St. Clements School (Toronto) defeated Ridley 40-27. Mia Kidd (6 points, 17 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists) was the player of the game.
Bishop Strachan School (Toronto) defeated Ridley 44-20. Abigail Davidson (7 points, 11 steals, 7 rebounds, 4 assists) was named player of the game.
Prep Girls Hockey
Prep Girls swept three games in JWHL (Junior Women’s Hockey League) action in Ottawa.
It was a full team effort for the Tigers, who outscored their opponents 26-5.
The Tigers topped the Lady Grads 7-2 as Abygail Grexton had two goals and Lilli Welcke, Booklyn Clark, Catherine Foulem, Avery Penner and Anna Barrington each scored. Hallie McClelland made 23 saves.
Lilli Welcke had two goals while Foulem, Rachel Wing, Abby Russell and Luisa Welcke scored in a 6-1 win over the Ottawa 67’s. Brooke Loranger made 32 saves in goal.
Ridley also defeated the Pacific Steelers with multiple goal scorers.
Next Up: Appleby at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Prep Boys Hockey
Prep Boys Hockey dropped a 2-1 decision to Ulysse Academy in the championship game at the Barrow Tournament.
The Tigers also topped Upper Canada College 5-3, lost 2-0 to A21 Academy, and topped Ulysse Academy 4-2 at the tournament.
The Tigers defeated Trinity College School 3-1 in CISAA a regular season game.
Scoring leaders: Rylee Hlusiak led the way with five while goals Colton Chipman was close behind with four goals.
Tony Theodoropoulos earned the CISAA win at Trinity College School, and Brandon White and Carlo Muraro each earned a win at the Barrow Tournament.
Team record: 22-7-1-1.
