Ridley roundup
Prep Boys Basketball
After an electric start to 2020, the Prep Boys Basketball team had a tough second week of January posting two tough losses in Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association play.
The first was a great battle on the road Tuesday with defending OSBA champion TRC Academy. Having been defeated by the Tigers in their first meeting this season, the Wolfpack came out determined and pushed an early lead to more than 20 points. The resilient Ridley side did not break and battled all the way back to within six in the fourth quarter before ultimately succumbing 85-77.
The dynamic duo of John Avgousti and Cormack McMahon led the way with 21 and 19 points, respectively.
Back on home court Thursday night, the Tigers looked to get back in the hunt in the Western Division, but ran into an Athlete Institute Bears squad playing their best basketball of the season. Ridley led most of the evening until a late run in the fourth quarter saw the visitors sneak ahead by two. Four lead changes later, the Tigers held the final possession, but just couldn’t get the roll they needed dropping a 75-74 decision.
The Tigers will look to rebound this week hosting Canada’s best team, Orangeville Prep, Friday at 7 p.m. in the Griffith Gym.
Prep Girls Hockey
Prep Girls Hockey blanked Nichols 3-0 as Brooke Lorranger earned the shutout.
Emma Penner, Abygail Grexton and Luisa Welcke scored.
The Tigers also topped Bishop Strachan School 8-1.
First Boys Hockey
The First Boys Hockey Team defeated Royal St. George College 2-0 Monday afternoon in front of a great crowd of Ridley faithful.
Brilliant goaltending by Xavier West kept the game scoreless at the end of first before Johnny Gocking scored on a power play to put Ridley up 1-0.
A beautiful glove save by Sammy Rootes in the last two minutes of play held RSGC off the scoreboard, allowing Lucas Wiley to pot an empty-netter to put the game out of reach.
The Tigers also dropped a 4-2 decision to Nichols.
After a scoreless first period, Nichols struck quick in the second period to go up 1-0. A quick response by the Tigers Sammy Rodrigues got Ridley on the board before another quick exchange between the squads, which was capped by a jam play by Bradyn Wark tying the game at 2-2 late in the second. An exciting third period left the Tigers wanting as Nichols was able to jam one in before sealing it in the final seconds with an empty netter.
Noah Sloane had a strong game in goal for the Tigers while Andreas Gomez demonstrated hustle and drive
The Tigers fall to 1-2 with the loss.
