Ridley roundup
Building Resiliency Event
This past Saturday, Ridley hosted a series of events which highlighted the power of sport in building resilience.
The day began in the Mandeville Theatre, with a keynote address delivered by Olympian and PanAm silver medalist, Sarah Wells. The recently retired track and field star has recently shifted her attention to the Believe Initiative, a program she founded to engage students, empower them to build resilience and help them recognize the power of self-belief.
Following her talk, Wells joined Lower School students and friends in the Fieldhouse for the Run, Jump, Throw Physical Literacy event. Building on the basic movement skills that are foundational for track and field, the dynamic games allowed students to build skills—all while having a great time with their friends. The young athletes were then introduced to the upcoming 2021 Canada Games by new mascot Shelly and the Games Community Engagement Team. The students participated in their gameshow-style education platform, which required participants to watch an informative video and answer questions about the Canada Games. The boys and girls had an amazing time and walked away informed about the opportunity for our region to build on the incredible power of sport and community.
The program concluded with Ridley’s rowing crews completing a 24-hour Ergathon in support of Ridley alumnus and national team rower, Mathew Szymanowski, who suffered a debilitating neck injury this summer. The Tigers more than met their goal to raise funds for Matt’s GoFundMe site, which was started to help him during his transition. By all accounts, Matt has remained resilient, upbeat and focused on his recovery—we hope the support from his alma mater will continue to inspire him as much as he has inspired us.
Prep Boys Hockey
The Prep Boys hockey team hosted a Midwest Prep Hockey League Divisional Weekend and came away with two wins in three games.
The Tigers dropped a 4-2 decision to Bishop’s College School before defeating Rice Memorial 7-0 and Rothesay Netherwood School 5-4.
Rylee Hlusiak led the way with six goals, while Carter Giles added two.
Carlo Muraro earned both wins in net.
The Tigers improved their overall record to 32-16-3-1.
“As a whole, the weekend went great,” said head coach, Mike McCourt. “Four very competitive teams battled it out in front of hundreds of fans and dozens of coaches and scouts. Hosting an MPHL Divisional Weekend is always one of the highlights of our season, and this weekend was a great experience for everyone involved.
“As for our team, we were able to rebound from a slow start in game one, and lock up the number one seed heading into playoffs in a couple of weeks. The boys battled hard all year long, and clinching the number one seed speaks to the determination and consistency they showed throughout the regular season.”
Up Next: CISAA (Canadian Independent Schools Athletic Association) game Monday, Feb. 3 at St. Michael’s College School.
First Boys Hockey
First Boys Hockey team took a huge step in coming together as a team on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-2 tie versus Royal St. George’s College—an exciting game that came down to the final minutes.
Noah Sloane played his best game of the season, making several key saves in the first period to keep the game scoreless going into the second period. As the game progressed, it was clear the bounces were not in favour of the Tigers. A questionable first goal for RSGC found the back of the net, even though Sloane appeared to be interfered with. Within 30 seconds a rebound went off a Tiger defenceman, allowing RSGC to go up 2-0. The boys were feeling the effects of the game going into the third, but came together and overcame the adversity that lay before them. A swarming attack by Bradyn Wark and Lucas Wiley could not be kept at bay as, within a minute into the third, Wark snapped one in. In the final two minutes of action, Wark was able to bury a rebound and tie it at 2-2.
Sloane and Xavier West provided the Tigers with great goaltending.
Prep Girls Hockey
Prep Girls Hockey defeated Trinity College School in CISAA action over the weekend, 2-0 and 3-0.
Hallie McClelland and Brooke Loranger earned the shutouts.
The Tigers, who improved to 7-0 in CISAA play, are off to Minneapolis, MN this weekend to wrap up Junior Women’s Hockey League regular season.
