Ridley roundup
Prep Boys Hockey
The Tigers topped Bishop’s College School 4-1 in the Midwest Prep Hockey League championship final in Buffalo.
The Tigers blanked St. Francis School 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Rothesay Netherwood School 3-2 in the semifinals.
Carter Giles led the way with three goals, while Nick Athanasakos, Brady Hildreth and Sam Christiano each had two.
Carlo Muraro earned all three wins in net.
“Winning a championship is never easy, especially when you have a target on your back, being the league’s back-to-back defending champions,” head Coach, Mike McCourt said. “We played responsible and consistent hockey throughout the weekend, and got contributions up and down the lineup.”
“The boys played their best hockey at the most important time of the year, and we’ll look to carry the momentum from our MPHL Championship into the CISAA playoffs.”
The Tigers now sport an overall record of 35-18-3-1.
Up Next: Thursday at home vs Upper Canada College at 1 p.m.
First Boys Hockey
First Boys Hockey team took to the ice on Wednesday afternoon in front of a crowd of 400+ students from Hillfield Strathallan College.
With a short bench due to illnesses and early leaves for break, the Tigers gave a valiant effort, but dropped a 4-1 decision.
HSC struck early to go ahead, but a beautiful pass from Lucas Wiley to Owen Leach allowed the Tigers to draw even. Great goaltending by Sammy Rootes and Noah Sloan held the Trojans at bay, but in the end the HSC numbers overtook the fatigued Tigers.
The whole team deserves to be commended for their great effort, and for keeping pace with a squad that had double the players.
Prep Girls Hockey
Prep Girls Hockey spent the Family Day weekend in Washington, D.C., where they faced off against some of the best U19 clubs and school-based programs in North America at the 2020 Junior Women’s Hockey League Challenge Cup.
The Tigers topped Stanstead College 1-0, dropped a 2-1 decision to Meijer, tied Edouard Montpetit 1-1 and tied CIHAWT (Beijing, China) 3-3.
The Tigers finished first in their group before falling to the eventual champions from St. Mary’s Shattuck.
Next Up: CISSA semifinals at Ridley on Friday, February 28th.
First Boys Basketball
The Tigers came out firing on all cylinders last Wednesday with one of their most effortful and energetic performances of the season en route to a 59-56 win over the Blues from Upper Canada College.
The boys spread the load on offence with Adam Mcdonald netting 16 points, SJ Tuedor with 14 points and Nolan Crawford tallying 13 points on the back of three, three-pointers.
Distance shooting may have been the difference for the Tigers with six players scoring at least one three-pointer in the narrow victory.
These teams will get another shot to continue their heated battle when they meet up in the first round of the CISAA playoffs Saturday afternoon at UCC.
JV Girls Hockey
The JV Girls beginner squad took to the ice to face a group of women from the Niagara Beginners Hockey League.
The girls dominated much of the game with stalwart defence and rushes from Olivia Melnyk and Mia Kidd. Melynk open the scoring on a rush out of her zone and from a sniper shot just inside the blue line. Grace Tylee found her place in this game and scored midway through the second to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. NBHL started to press and tied the game up, before Tylee put in the game winner to clinch the win 3-2. The girls had a blast and developed confidence in the game.
