Ridley roundup
Prep Boys Hockey
Prep Boys Hockey defeated Upper Canada College 5-2 and 3-0 in Canadian Independent Schools Athletic Association play.
Ethan Marois recorded a hat trick in the 5-2 win while Carlo Muraro earned both wins in net.
The wins improve the Tigers overall record to 37-18-3-1.
“Thursday was an important game for us, as we needed to beat UCC in order to secure home ice in the first round of the CISAA playoffs. We were able to take care of business, and secure a home game against the very same UCC team,” head coach Mike McCourt said.
“It’s always hard to beat the same opponent two games in a row, especially only a few days later, but the boys stuck with it, and played even better than they did on Thursday. We’ve now given ourselves a great opportunity to go to St. Andrews and knock off the team that has owned the CISAA league for over a decade.”
Up Next: CISAA semifinal Wednesday at 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s College.
Junior Varsity Girls Novice Hockey
The JV novice girls defeated the Niagara Regional Beginners team 6-4.
Grace Tylee opened the scoring with three in a row for the hat trick before adding a fourth goal. Olivia Massis and Mia Kidd also scored.
Chloe Winterbottom stood strong on the blueline while other key defensive plays came from Fiona Kemp-Griffin, with strong back-checking, and Sophia Ruffolo, who was a force in front of the goal.
Offensively, the Tigers connected on passes and pounced on rebounds.
Georgia Haydon and Maya Sirhan added assists.
The Tigers also dropped a 9-4 decision at Nichols School in Buffalo.
Ridley took the loss, but the game was much closer than the score indicated. The Tigers hit two posts early on, before finding the back of the net. It was great to get experience at game pace, and the team also showed noticeable improvement in positional play.
Tiger netminders Brynn Lund and Elyza West were peppered with pucks, coming up with several key saves. The little details like lifting sticks, clean breakouts, and back-checking don’t show up as numbers on the scoreboard, but they were goals that the team achieved.
Rylie Wake and Hannah McMaster collected two goals each while Olivia Melnyk and Riley McMaster added assists.
On Tuesday afternoon, the JV Girls hockey team traveled to local rival, Eden High. The last time these teams met Eden skated their way to a 6-1 victory.
The Tigers would tell a different tale this time. With improved fitness and game experience, the Tigers offence came to life while also playing solid defence in a 5-2 win.
Rylie Wake and Adela Dunkley scored for Ridley in the opening period. Ridley’s defensive squad kept Eden’s shots to the outside, allowing netminder Brynn Lund to settle into her game. Lund made several key saves to keep Eden scoreless in the first. Hannah McMaster would add a pair of goals and Vanessa Ferrante would round out the scoring. Goaltender Elyza West held the Flyers to one goal in the third.
The Tigers now turn to off-season training before returning to the ice in fall of 2020.
Rowing
The Development Boys Rowing Team had their first taste of competition on the rowing ergometer with great results by all. This is considered a warm-up to next Saturday when the whole team participates in the Ontario Ergometer Championships.
