Rookie impresses for Reds
Ethan Fisher has made an immediate impact with the Denis Morris Reds field lacrosse team.
The 15-year-old, Grade 9 student has quickly become one of DM’s go-to players on offence in his rookie season.
Fisher collected four goals and an assist Thursday as the Reds defeated the Saint Michael Mustangs 9-4 in a Niagara Catholic Athletic Association boys field lacrosse game at Kiwanis Field.
“It’s a great opportunity to get to know everyone so that in the future you know more people,” Fisher said, when asked about competing with and against older competition.
“It’s hard. When you have a not-so-good guy, you have to take him on one-on-one and capitalize on the mismatches and if you have a better guy, get it to the guy who has a weaker guy and get open.”
Fisher’s prowess comes as no surprise to DM head coach Matt Vinc.
“(He has to deal with) the transition from playing guys his own age to playing guys who are 17 and 18 years old and the physical aspects and not being timid,” Vinc said. “He’s not overly small and he’s able to use his hands and good lacrosse IQ to make good decisions and today you saw a lot of that.
“I was expecting good things from him, maybe not this early, but it’s good to see a Grade 9 contribute and he’s done that in every game he’s played.”
Fisher plays box lacrosse for the St. Catharines Athletics and last season was part of a bantam team that won a provincial championship.
“He’s a kid who I know his dad (Bob Fisher). I know where he plays outside of lacrosse and how successful that team has been. He’s been well coached his whole life with his dad and Mike Accursi,” Vinc said.
Fisher has some simple goals for his first season with the Reds.
“A lot of goals, teamwork, helping everyone out and having a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s capitalizing on your opportunities and making the most of it out there.”
Fisher has big plans for the future. He would like to continue his career with the junior A Athletics and the move on to a pro career with the National Lacrosse League.
The Reds improved to 2-0-2 with the victory and now advance to play the Holy Cross Raiders next week in the NCAA final.
“We’ve done pretty well considering today we were missing Payton McIntosh and starting goalie Austin Paddy,” Vinc said. “Overall, I liked how we’ve played so far. We have a lot of new players who maybe didn’t play as much last year and they’ve come in and are playing quality minutes and really contributing.”
