For the second straight week, a Niagara Falls football player was named an Ontario University Athletics football Player of the Week.
Queen’s Anthony Federico was the top defensive performer last week and this week the top offensive performer is Waterloo quarterback Tre Ford.
The A.N. Myer product was 15-22 in the air for 226 yards and three touchdown passes. On the ground, Ford carried the ball for 169 yards on only 10 carries to help Waterloo defeat the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 36-12 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Also for Waterloo: Justin Succar caught a 15-yard TD pass from Ford among his two catches for 19 yards and he also added a 12-yard run; Jack Andrews had five assisted tackles and a sack; Tyrell Ford had a solo tackle, an assisted tackle and a 30-yard interception return.
In Queen’s 30-7 victory over Ottawa, Federico had five solo tackles, two assisted tackles and two sacks for total losses of 33 yards.
Playing in Carleton’s 30-17 victory over York, Carleton’s Keaton Bruggeling had TD catches from eight and seven yards out and finished the game with three catches for 35 yards. He also had one carry for 11 yards.
In Western’s 23-21 loss to Guelph, Western’s Antonio Valvano had three catches for 21 yards and a pair of solo tackles on defence. Also for Western, Jake Andrews had two solo tackles and an assisted tackle.
BROCK ROWING
After not racing for almost two years, Brock rowers were eager to see how they stacked up against others. The western half of the OUA schools were at the Guelph Regatta with the eastern schools competing at the head of the Rideau.
Placing first for Brock were: Sam Stewart and Michael Ciepiela in men’s open pair; Thomas Markewich in men’s lightweight single; Olivia Kwiatowski and Brenna Carroll in the women’s open double; Pilar Dietrich, Olivia Jose, Alicia Piazza, Zoe Durcak, Madeline Hingston, Laci Schute, Jordan Isnor, Rowan O Neill and Isabella Durcakin in the women’s lightweight eight; Riley Pisek, Tony DiDomenico, Chris Gomez, Benjamin Hersche, Adam Muldoon, Samual Maconco, Connor Dodds, Jared Boles and Jonathan Cinquina in the men’s lightweight eight; Kathleen Macdonald, Sarah Slattery, Victoria Collins, Faith Thomas and Jalyn Mowry in the women’s open coxed four; Clara Sebastianelli, Daniel Brophy, Jonathan Hickman, Ian Doctor and Kevin Keith in the men’s open coxed four; Riley Pisek, Samual Maconco, Connor Dodds, Jared Boles and Jonathan Cinquina in the lightweight men’s coxed four; Tony DiDomenico and Chris Gomez in the lightweight men’s pair; Laci Schute and Madeline Hingston in the lightweight women’s pair; Thomas Markewich and Stephen Harris in the lightweight men’s double; and, Oskars Rugelis in the men’s open single.
Finishing second for Brock were: Stephen Harris in men’s lightweight single; Pilar Dietrich, Rowan O Neill, Jordan Isnor. Zoe Durcak and Olivia Jose in the lightweight women’s coxed four; Clara Sebastianelli, Sam Stewart, Michael Ciepiela, Daniel Brophy, William Bryden, Jonathan Hickman, Keithan Woodhouse Elijah Lopez and Oskars Rugelis in the men’s open eight; and, Benjamin Hersche and Adam Muldoon in the lightweight men’s pair.
Ending up third for Brock were: Sara Slattery and Victoria Collins in women’s open pair; and, Alicia Piazza and Isabella Durcak in the lightweight women’s double.
BROCK’S TOP ATHLETES
Women’s rower Olivia Jose and men’s rugby fly half Steven Commerford were named Brock’s Athletes of the Week.
Jose, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Niagara Falls, helped the Brock women’s rowing team to a gold in the women’s lightweight eight and a silver in the four at the Guelph Invitational.
Commerford scored two tries and the game-winning penalty goal in a 13-12 victory over Western.
NIAGARA COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Niagara College women’s soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 2-0 win over the Sheridan Bruins.
Scoring for Niagara were Terin Hultink and Sydney Sica.
