PANTHERS BASKETBALL REGISTRATION

Tryouts for the Pelham Panthers boys and girls travel basketball teams will start the week of Sept. 10.

There is no cost for the tryouts for players in Grade 3 to Grade 12 but players must be registered at https://pelhambasketball.sportngin.com/register/form/351463084.

All the house leagues are full and no more registrations are being accepted. E-mail ppba.registrar@gmail.com to get on a waitlist.

REBELS BASKETBALL REGISTRATION

St Catharines Rebels basketball registration is at 500 players and there are still openings in all the house leagues and select teams.

The Junior NBA program is full.

Select team tryouts start the week of Sept 10.

RED RAIDERS BASKETBALL REGISTRATION

Boys and girls ages six to 18 who are interested in playing in the Niagara Falls Red Raiders basketball can register online at http://nfredraiders.com or attend an in-person registration Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. until noon at the MacBain Centre.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

The 73rd Walt McCollum Niagara District Champions of Champions Golf Tournament will be played Saturday, Sept. 24 at St Catharines Golf and Country Club.

The tournament will have a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start and include Niagara’s top eight professionals competing for the Niagara PGA Championship.

After golf, there will be an awards presentation, food and drinks and the presentation of Niagara’s Wall of Recognition 2022 class.

Bernie Puchalski, a graduate of Brock University and Niagara College, worked in journalism in Niagara for more than 27 years before taking a voluntary buyout from The Standard at the end of 2016. He started his career as a news reporter for the Niagara Falls Review before switching to sports reporting. He was a sports reporter and sports editor at the Niagara Falls Review before joining the Standard's sports department in 1996. He was named the Standard's sports editor in 2000 and became the regional sports editor, in charge of the Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Standard, in 2015, a position he held until he left the company. During his time in newspapers, he was a multiple winner and finalist for numerous Ontario and Western Ontario Newspaper Awards for sports reporting, spot news reporting and humour writing. He was a member of the Standard Boys Basketball Tournament committee and co-chair of the Standard Girls Basketball Tournament, helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for bursaries presented to participants in the tournament. He also served on countless local sports committees both in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.
