Smurlick tops women’s golf tour
Sue Thomson carded a 77 this past Sunday at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Course to win the final stop on the Niagara Women’s Golf Tour.
Martha Cruikshank, Mina Alborino and Sarah Anne Smurlick tied for second with 85s followed by Ruth McBride with an 86 and Shelley Bauer and Kim Eros with 87s.
Smurlick from Freedom Oaks Golf Club finished as the overall winner of the tour which included tournaments at Twenty Valley, Sawmill, Whirlpool, Bridgewater and Niagara-on-the-Lake. The low four scores for the tour counted towards the overall points championship.
In the Stableford category, the high point getter at Niagara-on-the-Lake was Suzie Sexton from Sawmill followed by Shellee Niznik (Twenty Valley), Carolyn May (Sawmill) and Julie Zulik (Bridgewater).
About 20 low handicap-golfers competed in each of the tournaments this season.
The tour has been operating for 10 years but will disband in its current form this year. The women who played it will continue to gather and challenge each other on courses around the district next season.
FOUR-BALL TOURNAMENT
Regine Treschak from Sawmill and public player Anne Moss recorded a net score of 63 to win the recent
Niagara District Women’s Four-Ball Golf Tournament at Willodell.
Second place went to Donna Larsen and Karen Sabzali from Sawmill with a net 66. Tied for third at net 67 were Ginny Green and Robin Foster from Niagara-on-the-Lake and Pierrette Crawford and Cathie Gage from Rolling Meadows.
A total of 22 teams took part in the tournament which has been held for many years at different golf courses in Niagara. The scoring is based on each team’s low net score for each hole after applying an 85 per cent course handicap.
