Solid spring for Tremeer
Niagara Olympic Club runner Julia Tremeer expanded her horizons this spring.
“I did the 400 this year which I had never done before and that was exciting,” the 17-year-old Fenwick resident said. “I did something new and I did really well and better than I thought I would because it was so new to me. Throughout the year, my 400 time went down significantly.”
The Grade 12 student at Notre Dame was recognized as the NOC’s top female performer of the spring based on her results in the 400 metres and 800 metres. In the 400, she won the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association title, placed second at South Regionals and finished 14th at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships. Competing in the 800 metres, she was second at SOSSA and South Regionals. At OFSAA, she finished 12th based on her time from the heats. She has also qualified to compete at Legion Nationals in both events.
Tremeer used to compete in the 1,500 metres but switched it out for the 400 metres this season.
“I felt like I could be good at the 400 and why not try it?”
Making it to OFSAA in the 400 was her highpoint of the spring.
“I wasn’t ranked very highly going into South Regionals. I was very happy with that because it was unexpected. It was really exciting doing it in my first year of senior.”
She feels the biggest progression she has made as a runner this year was being able to break a minute in the 400 metres.
“I did it the first time at SOSSA and that was pretty exciting for me because I has been running all my times before that in over a minute,” she said. “I haven’t got a PB in the 800 yet but it has been really consistent.”
Her goal is to lower her PB in the 800.
The next step for her will come in the shorter event.
“I definitely have to work on my 400. I am not done with it technically and things aren’t all right yet. That makes sense because I am so new to it.”
Tremeer trains at the club three times a week and she runs three days a week at home.
She has been running with the Niagara Olympic Club for the past five years. Tremeer used to also play soccer but now focuses on running with the exception of playing for the Notre Dame field lacrosse team.
Niagara Olympic Club coach Bill MacDonald describes her as the epitome of a dedicated athlete.
“She sets challenging but realistic goals for herself and communicates these very well to her coaches. Her maturity shows as she realizes that attaining these goals takes time and patience. Her power in the 400/800 combination this year has been a real joy to witness. There’s much more to come from Julia in the future.”
She is looking forward to competing at Legion Nationals.
“I want to keep training and working hard. It is summer now and I don’t want my focus to falter from running because I am working now too. I feel like that is going to help me a lot.”
Her ultimate dream is to run at the post secondary level.
“That is my goal right now and I want to start talking to schools and stuff soon.”
She is interested in studying business so the ideal would be to find a school with a good business program and track program.
