South Regional track results and highlights
Port Colborne’s Kaleb Grover was the top Niagara performer during the second day of action Friday at the South Regionals track and field meet at Welland Centennial.
Grover won the senior boys shot put (14.21 metres) and senior boys discus (45.86 metres).
Grimsby’s Kaleb Kennedy was also a double winner, finishing first in the junior boys javelin (50.18 metres) and running with Grimsby’s championship junior boys 4X100-metre relay team.
A.N. Myer’s Michael Ivanov won the senior boys long jump (6.45 metres) Friday to go with the high jump and pole vault crowns he won on Thursday.
Winning regional gold and setting Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association records in the process were: Blessed Trinity’s Sophia Cino in the junior girls 3000 metres (10:37.85); and Eden’s Matteo Tonnos in the junior boys 3000 metres (8:50.92).
E.L. Crossley showed its dominance in the team standings winning the combined, boys and girls titles. Port Colborne was second in the boys division and Governor Simcoe was fourth.
Other local winners Friday were: Myer’s Kristina Etezadi, junior girls 800 metres (2:23.73); Churchill’s Charlotte Berner, junior girls 300-metre hurdles (50.87); Port Colborne’s Sammy Tonnies, junior boys 800 metres (2:04.74); Grimsby junior boys 4X100-metre relay (Luca Radke-Harris, Kaleb Kennedy, Khamal Reid and James Gill); Lakeshore Catholic’s Sarah Lovegrove, novice girls high jump (1.4 metres); E.L. Crossley’s Cherish Dunn, tied in novice girls pole vault (2.2 metres); Grimsby’s Coco Van Nynatten, novice girls discus (34.71 metres); Notre Dame’s Cassie Orr, novice girls javelin (32.97 metres); E.L. The top four individuals and teams advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships June 2-4 at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University.
