Steelheads edge IceDogs
The Niagara IceDogs’ losing streak reached four games with a 3-2 loss at Mississauga Friday night in Ontario Hockey League play.
The Steelheads opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Richard Whittaker early on and Keean Washkurak with less than two minutes to play. Each team collected 16 shots on goal.
Akil Thomas got the IceDogs on the board with his second of the season at the 5:48 mark of the second. It was the lone goal of the middle frame.
Philip Tomasino’s eighth of the year early in the third tied the game at 2-2. Thomas Harley then netted the winner two minutes later for the Steelheads.
Christian Sbaraglia rebounded from a rough outing last week to kick out 51 shots in goal for the IceDogs.
IceDogs coach Billy Burke came away encouraged.
“I thought we played with more of an identity tonight of how we want to play,” he said. “Certainly there were a lot of positives to build off.”
Niagara, 3-5-2-1, are home to the Guelph Storm, 3-3-1-1, Saturday at 7 p.m.
