Thompson secures silver at OFSAA
Cole Thompson came within two strokes of a gold medal at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Associations boys golf championships.
The Grade 10 student from Blessed Trinity Catholic School in Grimsby placed second in the individual high school flight at the FireRock Golf Club in Komoka, Ont.
Thompson had rounds of 74 and 80 for a two-day total of 152, two shots back of the gold medalist.
“I posted a pretty good round the first day,” Thompson said. “I’m still very happy to get silver but gold would have been amazing as well, only being two shots off.
“It was there but I’ve got two more years to go for it. I’ll be in the open division next year because I’ll be playing some provincial tournaments this summer so that’s more competition to look forward to as well for that.”
The silver capped off a memorable season for the Sawmill member who also placed first atop the U19 division overall points standings on the Niagara District Junior Tour before winning the junior boys division at the 73rd Annual Walt McCollum Niagara District Champions of Champions golf tournament.
Thompson said he enjoys competing against the best.
“I knew the competition was going to be good because these are all the best golfers in high school divisions in Ontario so I knew there was going to be some good kids there,” he said. “I was just focusing on doing as good as I could and trying not to worry about how other people were doing because I knew that would get into my head.
“Playing against Grade 12s is definitely intimidating too. They’re stronger and outdriving you but it gives me a lot to look forward to and helps me set goals to see where I stand and where I want to be in the next couple of years.”
Blessed Trinity (Thompson, John Kingdon, Hudson Mielko and Jordan Spratt) was the lone school from the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) in the team competition and finished ninth with a combined score of 488 over the two days.
Michael Martel, a Grade 11 student at Notre Dame, finished fifth in the open division with 148 rounds of 72 and 75.
Eduardo Ramirez of Saint Michael Catholic School finished sixth in the individual high school flight with a two-day total of 158 (79,79).
Thompson said he is already preparing for next season working with his coach Adam Stienschifter as well as doing putting drills in his baseman and hitting the gym.
“No time off for me. I’ll be golfing the whole off season,” he said.
