Thorold Elite hosting community meet July 26
It’s time to dust off the track and field shoes and get ready to compete.
The Thorold Elite Track Club will be hosting a community track meet on the evening of Wednesday, July 26 at Canada Games Park.
Events open to community members to take part in include the 100 metres, 400 metres, 1000 metres, long jump and shot put. The fee is $10 for one event or $20 for any three.
The events are open to all ages and athletes do not have to be a member of a track club to participate. There will be additional events available to competitive members as well.
“Whether you’re a 10-year-old or a 40-year-old, we want to get as many people as possible to come out and run, jump, or throw just for fun and to experience this great facility at Brock,” Thorold Elite’s Steven Fife said. “If you already play hockey or lacrosse at this venue, we encourage you to maybe come and run the 100 metres or to try long jump or shot put. If you are a soccer player, maybe see what your 400 or 1K time is. There is something for everyone.”
The July 26 meet will be the fifth one hosted in the last few months by Thorold Elite at Canada Games Park. The meets have attracted athletes from Windsor, London, Brantford, Hamilton, Toronto and other surrounding regions.
“It’s great to be able to hold events like this within our own community and to open it up a little bit more this time to welcome those outside of Athletics Ontario and offer them a taste of what track and field has to offer and what we can now do within our own backyard,” Fife said. “It’s something we have been wanting to do for a while and another way to make the sport more accessible to all.”
He believes the track and field venue at Canada Games Park has been a game-changer for the athletics community.
“Although we have members from all corners of Niagara, we have Thorold in our name and we are now able to centralize a lot of our operations right here in Thorold,” Fife said. “We are grateful to not only be training regularly at Canada Games Park but to be hosting six weeks of summer camp there and so we want to give back what we can and continue to promote the sport and the venue as much as possible. It was supported by the community so we want to give the community a chance to experience it with an event that is geared towards them.”
