Thorold High’s athletic award winners

Tyrese Gibson and Ashley Mayhew were named senior boys and senior girls athletes of the year at Thorold Secondary School’s recent athletic awards ceremony.

Earning junior athlete of the year awards were Bruno Nepomuceno and Jesse Davies.

Senior girls and boys academic athlete of the year award were presented to Anna Hammond and Stefan Dmytryshyn.

Highlights of the year included: senior girls basketball making it to zone final and the consolation final of the BPSN tourney; senior boys volleyball made it to the zone finals; varsity football made it to Tier 1 semifinals before losing to Tier 1 West Niagara; varsity hockey, junior girls basketball, junior boys volleyball and junior and senior boys basketball reached the semifinals; varsity girls rowing earned bronze at Mother’s Day Regatta; Brayden Turner excelled at track and field; and, Ryan Custers won a Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association wrestling title.

Varsity boys hockey: Cole Crothers, MVP; Will Sargeant, defenceman of the year.

Varsity girls hockey: Hammond, MVP.

Swimming: Carson Ho, junior swimmer of the year; Koen Knerr, senior swimmer of the year.

Junior girls volleyball: Jordyn Janes, Sarah Vanderwier and Bruna Nepomuceno, coaches awards.

Senior girls volleyball: Mayhew, MVP; Marissa Hahl, coaches award.

Junior boys basketball: Miller Miotto, MVP; Aareer Khowaja, coaches award.

Senior boys basketball: Isaac Walker, MVP; Gibson, coaches award.

Wrestling: Custers, MVP; Noah Imerese, rookie of the year.

Badminton: Austin Gambell and Kohta Netzke, novice/junior MVP; Kai Netzke, senior MVP.

Girls soccer: Charlee Rowland, MVP: Russell, coaches award.

Boys soccer: Jake Rouchkov, MVP; Basil Sheikh, coaches award.

Ultimate: Kaleb Locatelli, MVP; Wyatt Colquhoubn, rookie of the year.

Track and field: Knerr and Kaidyn Fournier-Phillips, coaches awards.

Unified athletics: Nevaeh MacDonald, unified athlete; Kasey Hirniak, SSTC athlete.

Golden Eagle: Ethan Godfrey.

Academic Athletes of the Year

Bernie Puchalski, a graduate of Brock University and Niagara College, worked in journalism in Niagara for more than 27 years before taking a voluntary buyout from The Standard at the end of 2016. He started his career as a news reporter for the Niagara Falls Review before switching to sports reporting. He was a sports reporter and sports editor at the Niagara Falls Review before joining the Standard's sports department in 1996. He was named the Standard's sports editor in 2000 and became the regional sports editor, in charge of the Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Standard, in 2015, a position he held until he left the company. During his time in newspapers, he was a multiple winner and finalist for numerous Ontario and Western Ontario Newspaper Awards for sports reporting, spot news reporting and humour writing. He was a member of the Standard Boys Basketball Tournament committee and co-chair of the Standard Girls Basketball Tournament, helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for bursaries presented to participants in the tournament. He also served on countless local sports committees both in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.
