Tremeer leads the way
Julia Tremeer led the medal haul for the Niagara Olympic Club at the Ontario U14/16 championships held at NOC over the weekend.
The 14-year-old won a gold as part of the 4×800 relay team, silver with the 4×400 relay team, and bronze in the 1,200-metre race. She also placed seventh in the 800.
“Of course I was hoping to do well this weekend,” the Fenwick resident said. “I’ve been training really hard so it’s nice to have that pay off.”
Athletes had to deal with oppressive heat over the weekend and Tremeer said she just tried to be as smart as possible.
“I was really, really hot and no one likes to run when it’s that hot but I just drank a lot of water and stayed in the shade when I could,” she said.
Tremeer also had to modify her training for the shorter relay race.
“I’m usually running longer distances like the 800 so the 4×400 was a bit different for me,” she said. “I had to train differently for that one of course, do some shorter speed stuff.
Tremeer teamed up with Zoe Quinn, Thea Quinn and Clair Moran in the 4×800 for gold and Zoe Quinn, Thea Quinn and Chloe Dilalla in the 4×400 for the silver.
“The relays are really special because I trained so hard with my teammates,” she said. “It was really nice to win it together and share that experience.”
Tremeer, who is entering Grade 9 at Notre Dame, joined NOC two years ago.
“I played soccer since I was about four years old and always liked to run. When I was in Grade 3, I was able to run cross-country for my elementary school and did really well so I joined running since then.”
Other notable performances by NOC athletes included: Sarah Lovegrove, who earned a bronze in the high jump; Braedon Brouwer, who was sixth in the 100 and eighth in the 200; Lauren Thomas, who was eighth in the 200 and seventh in the 300; Dilalla, who fourth in the 1,200 and fifth in the 800; Zoe Quinn, who was eighth in the 1,200 and ninth in the 800; and, Thea Quinn, who was ninth in the 200.
Claire Moran, Anna Moran, Leah Kremble, Izzy Nyuyen placed fourth in the 4×400 while Paige Cottee, Emily Smilsky, Holly Cottee and Amara Hamilton were eighth.
“One really exciting highlight was the 4×400 relay, it was the last event of the meet and we had three teams and we came second, fourth and eighth,” NOC president and coach Sharon Stewart said. “It was pretty fun to see three teams out there in one race.
“It was a pretty exciting end to the meet, that’s for sure.”
Stewart tipped her cap to the relay teams.
“I give them a lot of credit because they ran the 1,200 followed fairly closely by the 4×800 and they were pretty determined,” she said. “They knew they would probably sacrifice some performance in the 800 the next day. There is a core group there did a lot of running in two days.”
The meet signals the end of the track and field season.
“We’ve got two weeks off before cross country, it’s a well-deserved break for athletes, coaches and parents,” Steward said. “Then it’s time to hit the trail.”
