Two golds for Ivanov
A.N. Myer’s Michael Ivanov was the top local performer Thursday on Day 1 of the South Regionals track and field meet at Welland Centennial.
The 12B student won both the senior boys high jump (1.9 metres) and pole vault (3.2 metres).
Other local winners were: Notre Dame’s Julia Tremeer, novice girls 1,500 metres (5:12.55); Saint-Jean-de-Brebeuf’s Morgan Shaw, novice girls 80-metre hurdles (13.47); Grimsby’s Coco Van Nynatten, novice girls shot put (11.4 metres); Blessed Trinity Sophia Cino, junior girls 1,500 metres (5:00.26); Saint-Jean-de-Brebeuf’s Alexandra Nickel, open girls 2,000-metre steeplechase (7:25.25); E.L. Crossley’s Henry Knafelc, novice boys pole vault (2.7 metres); Port Colborne’s Santiago Lariviere, novice boys shot put (12.3 metres); Eden’s Matteo Tonnos, junior boys 1,500 metres (4:15.18); Governor Simcoe’s Tijjani Adams, junior boys 110-metre hurdles (15.38); E.L. Crossley’s Ethan Van Niekerk, junior boys pole vault (2.8 metres); Saint Michael’s Tommy Dallman, junior boys discus (48.06 metres); E.L. Crossley’s Samuel Jeffery, senior boys 110-metre hurdles (15.27); Governor Simcoe Tristan McDoughall, senior boys javelin (51.66 metres); and, Denis. Morris’ Stephan Michael, boys intellectually impaired 100-metre dash (13.87 seconds).
The top five advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships June 2-4 at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University.
The meet continues Friday with the field events starting at 9:15 a.m. and the track events beginning at 9:30 pm. The meet ends at 3:30 p.m. with the open boys and girls 4X400-metre relays.
