The Niagara IceDogs cleared a logjam in net Monday, dealing veteran goaltender Tucker Tynan to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for a third-round selection in 2025 and an eighth-round selection in 2024.
The move paves the way for Josh Rosenzweig and rookie Joey Costanzo to share the position. The IceDogs had been operating with three goaltenders all season.
Rosenzweig, 18, has looked good of late and picked up his first win of the season last week versus the Ottawa 67’s.
“Josh is a guy we targeted really high in his draft year and it’s really starting to come along for him,” IceDogs general manager Joey Burke said. “He’s a guy you can tell put the work in during the downtime in the pandemic and he came back absolutely ready to prove he is a starting goaltender in this league and he’s done just that.
“Obviously, his sample size is early but we feel he’s done enough. Combined with how great Joey Costanzo has looked as a 16-year-old, we felt these two young guys have earned this opportunity. They are going to be with us for the next few years and obviously a guy like Tynan has some trade value where the young guys don’t quite yet and it wouldn’t be as good of a pick for us.”
Tynan, 19, was named the OHL’s goaltender of the week to open the 2021-22 season. Overall, he posted a 3.88 goals-against average and .892 save percentage.
Tynan returned to the IceDogs this year after missing much of the 2019/20 season following a deep laceration to his thigh after a collision in the crease against the London Knights on Dec. 12, 2019.
Burke said at the time that the collaborative efforts of both teams’ training staffs and on-ice personnel saved Tynan’s life. The Chicago native was tended to by medical staff from both teams on the ice before being removed on a stretcher and taken to hospital. He had surgery and was released five days later.
“This is one of those deals that makes sense for and helps everyone involved,” Burke said. “We can’t thank Tucker enough for everything in Niagara, and I wish him nothing but success in the Soo.
“We thought if we could move him to the west, to a team we’re not going to see as often, that was preferable. There was a bit of interest from the Eastern Conference but we wanted to make sure he ended up as far away from us as possible, so to speak.”
The trade was the latest in a series of moves to reshape the roster.
Mason Howard, Ethan Sims, Cameron Snow, A.J. Cook and Jonah DeSimone were all placed on and cleared OHL waivers. Howard has hooked on with the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Cook with the Cobourg Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and DeSimone with the Gatineau Olympique of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
“It’s very important for everyone to realize this is not a fire sale, this is not a big effort for us to get young and secure a high pick and mail it in on the season,” Burke said. “We genuinely feel all the subtractions we have made over the last few weeks have been in an effort to make us a better group and we feel the younger guys have proven they are going to bring more than some of the guys we moved out.
“We have to take age out of the consideration a little bit and go with the best players and we genuinely feel we’ve done that now. We feel we’ve created a tighter-knit group in the dressing room and by getting down a couple of bodies it’s removed some of the negativity when you have multiple scratches.”
The IceDogs are in Mississauga (13-6-1-1) Friday and home to Kingston (14-5-3) Saturday.
