The Niagara IceDogs have opened up a seven-point lead atop the Ontario Hockey League’s Central Division.
The IceDogs ran their record to 23-9-6-2 with a 6-5 shoutout win over the Hamilton Bulldogs Sunday afternoon in Hamilton. The two points give the IceDogs 52. The Sudbury Wolves are second in the division with 45 points.
The IceDogs once again were playing with a depleted lineup — they dressed only 16 skaters and never led — but managed to send the game into overtime when Philip Tomasino scored with just 20 seconds remaining in regulation.
Following a scoreless extra period, the IceDogs picked up the extra point when Stephen Dhillon stopped all three Hamilton shooters in the shootout while Ben Jones scored the winner.
Tomasino paced the IceDogs with two goals while Jones, Andrew Bruder and Jacob Paquette also scored.
Dhillon made 33 saves.
Matthew Strome and Arthur Kaliyev led the Bulldogs with two goals each while Grimsby’s Brandon Saigeon added one. Saigeon, who would seem a likely candidate to get moved by Thursday’s trade deadline, has 25 goals and 61 points in 40 games.
Strome also scored on a penalty shot but the goal was disallowed when the lights in the arena snapped off during the shot. Strome was forced to take the shot again and was stopped by Dhillon.
Friday night, the IceDogs dropped a 6-3 decision at home to the Erie Otters.
Kirill Maksimov, with his team-leading 26th of the season, Bradey Johnson and Tomasino scored for Niagara.
Former IceDog Danial Singer had a goal for the Otters and now has 13 goals and 27 points this season. Former Niagara Falls Canuck Kurtis Henry added an assist.
The IceDogs are home to Guelph Thursday and Kingston Friday.
