Chris Reid netted the winner 1:49 into overtime to give the St. Catharines Falcons a 2-1 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday night in Fort Erie.
“Good road win and happy to collect the four points on the weekend,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said.
Following a scoreless first period, the Meteors opened the scoring when Marcus Regina netted his eighth of the season early in the second. Rookie Parker Forlin responded for the Falcons later in the period to tie the score at 1-1.
“There was a bit of a feeling out process throughout the game and it led to a lot of perimeter play at times which resulted in a low scoring game,” Bielby said. “We will continue to take pride in keeping the puck out of the net, but it’s important we work on ways to create a little more offensive in front of their house. Too much to the outside. That being said it was a good win and we respect our opponent and the defensive game they played.”
Bielby also praised veteran forward Cam Knight, who set up the winner.
“That’s what we need out of our vets when the game is on the line. Knighter made a great strip in the O zone and a great pass to a streaking Reid who put the puck away.”
Fort Erie coach/general manager Nik Passero had no problem with his club’s effort.
“Both teams came to play and it was an intense game with a small dose of a playoff atmosphere,” Passero said. “I thought we did enough to win but just came up short. I love where our guys are and I think getting Joe Macchione back this week will be very important.”
Josh Johnson made 24 saves for the win.
Josh Smith took the loss, kicking out 22 shots.
