Weekend junior B roundup: Falcons top Mets; Corvairs split
The St. Catharines Falcons continue to find ways to beat the Fort Erie Meteors.
The Falcons topped the Meteors 5-4 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Saturday at the Leisureplex and are now 34-1 versus the Meteors since the beginning of the 2016/17 season. Fort Erie’s only win during that period was in February of last season.
The Falcons built a 2-0 lead in the first period before the Mets rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the second. St. Catharines then rebuilt their two-goal margin to lead 4-2 before the teams traded goals to see the Falcons lead 5-3 after two. The Meteors netted the lone goal of the third period.
“Good road win to cap off a four-point weekend,” St. Catharines coach Tyler Bielby said. “We didn’t like giving up a 2-0 lead, but proud of the way the guys responded after Fort Erie tied it up.”
The teams meet again Friday, Dec. 16 in St. Catharines.
“They are a well-coached team who are very difficult to play in their own barn,” Bielby said. “We look forward to more battles with Fort Erie as the season moves on.”
Cameron Lowe paced the Falcons with two goals and an assist while Blake Yetman added a goal and two helpers. Kyle Glenney and Chris Reid also scored.
Josh Johnson made 20 saves in net for the win.
