Weekend junior b roundup: Falcons win sixth straight, Junior Canadians upset Corvairs
The St. Catharines Falcons extended their winning streak to six games with a 3-2 victory over the Welland Junior Canadians Sunday in Welland.
The Falcons, 11-2-0-1, trail the Hamilton Kilty B’s by three points for first place in the Golden Horseshoe Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. The teams square off Monday in Hamilton.
St. Catharines jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two periods on goals from Nate Robertson and Wyatt Gibson. Jonah Boria extended their lead to 3-0 early in the third before the Junior Canadians rallied with a pair of late goals by Conner Thompson-Dick and Zach Kent.
“Thought we executed a good game plan through 40 minutes,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “Welland is a well-coached team, and up 3-0 in the third we knew they weren’t going to quit. They made a game of it with a couple of third-period goals and made it far too close for comfort considering we had a three-goal lead.
“I learned a long time ago you can never get too comfortable with a lead. We must play an entire 60 minutes to avoid some of these close calls.”
Bielby said Gibson had a strong game.
“The team was happy for rookie Wyatt Gibson. He has struggled to register a point this year and through hard work he was rewarded with a beautiful assist and goal,” Bielby said.
