Weekend junior B roundup: Falcons win twice; Panthers split; Mets top B’s
The St. Catharines Rankin Construction Falcons got back to what they do best and came away with a pair of wins over the weekend.
The Falcons defeated the Pelham Panthers 5-2 at home Friday and followed it up with a 5-2 triumph at Port Colborne Saturday to improve to 27-8-0-1, which leads the Eastern Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
“Thought it took us the first period in each of the two games to get our legs going,” Falcons assistant coach Joe Colasurdo said. “Moving forward we have to show up on time right from the puck drop. Only two goals against in both games. We got back to defending hard and playing within our structure.”
Brendan Grenville, Juan Agromayor, Nathan Duplessis, Marcus Harris and Jordan Marconi scored at Port while Hayden Jeffery made 32 saves.
Nathan DiPietro and Carter Timmins had the Port goals.
Stephen Amaro made 30 saves in a losing effort.
“Slow start in the first. Felt like we played our game and got off our feet in the second and third and the scoreboard reflected that,” Colasurdo said. “Really important for the team to learn how to close teams out like we did. The depth of our team shined and helped carry the way.”
Friday at home, Harris had two goals while Trent Gates, Treyson Dewar and Lucas Tuin also scored.
Jacob Ceranic made 17 saves for the win.
Jack Havers and Keagan Knight replied for Pelham.
Gabriel Longo made 29 saves for the Panthers.
“We did a great job creating scoring chances, bringing more traffic, getting to the net, something we put an emphasis on this week in practice,” Colasurdo said. “Once we got rolling, really happy with what every player brought to the table.”
The Falcons added 17-year-old forward Sam Mudie at the trade deadline from the Ayr Centennials.
“Had a strong first two games,” Colasurdo said. Got an assist in the first game and is back with his longtime teammate, Trent Gates, and playing on the same line. Has fit in really well with the team. His speed, hockey IQ, and skill were on display this weekend.”
Meteors 6 Kilty B’s 1
John Lloyd kicked out 28 shots as the Fort Erie Meteors took care of the Hamilton Kilty B’s at home.
Colton Radford and Aiden Zimmerman paced the Mets with two goals each while Kyle Adamo and Ethan Pepperall added singles.
Jaivyn Stewart replied for Hamilton.
Corvairs 5 RedHawks 1
Josh Branton made 30 saves as the Caledonia Corvairs defeated the Cambridge RedHawks in Caledonia.
Evan Bradacs, Ethan Royer, Matthew O’ Sullivan, Tyler Clark and Ethan Osborne scored.
Owen Yagar scored for Cambridge.
SUNDAY
Panthers 8 Junior Canadians 6
Allan Watt’s goal at 18:45 of the third period was the difference as the Pelham Panthers edged the Welland Junior Canadians 8-6.
Watt’s goal broke a 6-6 tie as Welland rallied with four goals in just over five minutes in the third to tie the game.
Weslee Croswell and Mason Goodfellow paced Pelham with two goals each while Francesco Sanita, Dylan Leslie and Evan Norris also scored.
Denimes Mosler-Plata and Braden Carruthers each had two goals for Welland while Brock Houser and Joey Marrese added singles. Ben Arnold chipped in with three assists.
