Weekend junior B roundup: Mets roll on, Falcons blank Sailors
The Fort Erie Meteors just keep on winning.
The Meteors topped the Welland Junior Canadians 9-2 Sunday night in Welland following a 4-1 win at home over the Hamilton Kilty B’s Saturday.
The Mets have won three in a row and eight of their last nine to climb to 17-5 and trail the Caledonia Corvairs by three points for first place. Their .773 winning percentage in second overall to the Corvairs in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
“A really solid take care of business weekend for us,” Fort Erie general manager/coach Nik Passero said. “Don’t think we gave up much more than 40 shots on the weekend.”
Hunter Cooley had three goals in the win over Welland while Caleb Bidgood and Liam Beamish added two each. Kyle Adamo, Ryan Robillard rounded out the scoring. John Lloyd earned the win with 25 saves.
Nico Kalpakis and Joey Marrese replied for Welland.
Saturday at home, Adamo, Bidgood, Nolan Stickland and Blake Hall scored while Charlie Burns made 21 saves for the win.
Dean Deligeorgis scored for Hamilton.
“Was nice to see some depth scoring in both games. Caleb Bidgood had a three-goal weekend and Hunter Coley scored his first junior hat-trick on Sunday night,” Passero said. “If we want to be successful moving forward we need scoring from our bottom six and we need to play well at home. Both of those things were taken care of this weekend. Our leadership group is doing a great job at keeping us going forward.”
Falcons 3 Sailors 0
Hayden Jeffery made 27 saves to pick up his second shutout of the season as the St. Catharines Falcons blanked the Port Colborne Sailors 3-0 Saturday at the Vale Centre.
Jeffery, a 17-year-old Grimsby native, is now 9-4 with a 2.32 goals-against average and .932 save percentage.
“Another great performance from Hayden who secured his second goose egg of the season,” St. Catharines general manager/coach Tyler Bielby said. “We are very happy with both our young goaltenders (Cal Gardner) right now. They have been giving us a chance to win night in and night out. Their futures are bright.”
Michael Colavecchia, Treyson Dewar and Chris Reid scored for the Falcons, who improved to 15-5-0-1.
“Nice to close out the weekend with a road win in Port. It was a solid team effort all weekend and the boys were rewarded with four points,” Bielby said.
Corvairs 5 Panthers 4
Steve LaForme, Markus Dempewolf, Jayden Lammel, Ryan O’Keefe and Sami Douglas scored as the Caledonia Corvairs edged the visiting Pelham Panthers Saturday night.
Davis Penner made 28 saves for the win.
Nick Tymochenko, Keagan Knight, Mitchell Swaine and Ty Boone replied for Pelham.
Logan Slou kicked out 52 shots in a losing effort.
