The Fort Erie Meteors split a pair of games over the weekend, dropping a 3-2 decision at home to the Welland Junior Canadians Saturday before rebounding to knock off the Pelham Panthers 6-2 Sunday afternoon.
“I thought we were pretty good Saturday, we just didn’t score,” Fort Erie general manager/coach Nik Passero said. “We make it 2-0 and we couldn’t get it to 3-0 and they battled back.
“I wasn’t too upset with the effort in their first game back after a long layoff.”
Dominic DiFrancesco and Cameron Golovin gave the Mets a 2-0 lead halfway through the first.
Jonathan Iwaniszyn, Jack Ryan and Noah Garthe replied for the Junior Canadians.
Andrew Welch made 27 saves in net for the win.
Six players scored in Sunday’s win at Pelham.
“Sunday, we were very dominant,” Passero said. “We were our old self and I was really happy. It was really nice to see”
Former Panther Logan Slou earned the win in goal with 25 saves versus his former team.
Blake Hall, Nolan Stickland, Owen Penny, Hunter Coley, Andrew MacNiel and newcomer Chaka-Benjamin Ntumba-Muntu scored for Fort Erie.
Luke Breadner and Caleb MacLeish replied for the Panthers.
Ntumba-Muntu, a 20-year-old winger from Laval who previously played in the Central Canadian Hockey League, was added recently and has three points in three games.
“He’s a great kid,” Passero said. “The guys love him. He’s a motor out there. He makes things happen every shift. He’s notable and we’re lucky to have him.”
Passero said the Mets may not be done making moves with the trade deadline of Wednesday looming.
“There is maybe one move I’m going to make in the next couple of days but for the most part I like our group,” he said.
Kilty B’s 4 Falcons 2
The St. Catharines Falcons saw their six-game winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 4-2 loss at Hamilton.
“Credit to a hard game played by Hamilton,” Falcons general manager/coach Tyler Bielby said. “That being said, we weren’t mentally ready to play. We will be challenged as a team every time we hit that ice. Winners are created with a never satisfied type mindset. There are no days off and that’s always a big teachable as we continue to work down the final stretch and prepare for playoffs.
“We will get back to work Tuesday, learn as a group, and be ready to go next weekend.”
Tyler Hunt and Calvin Petrovsky scored for St. Catharines.
Anthony Giacalone, Josh Sordo, Tyson Wassink and former Falcon Michael Colavecchia had the Hamilton goals. Ex-Falcon Chris Reid added two assists.
Vlad Visan made 28 saves for the win.
Cal Gardner faced 38 shots in goal for St. Catharines.
The Falcons did some heavy lifting last week picking up three players from the Port Colborne Sailors and Tanner Hunt from Hamilton at the trade deadline.
“We’re extremely happy with our group right now,” Bielby said. “We’re going to take it day by day.”
Corvairs 3 Sailors 0
Davis Penner kicked out 18 shots for the shutout as the Caledonia Corvairs blanked the visiting Port Colborne Sailors Saturday.
Jayden Lammel, Ryan O’Keefe and Sami Douglas replied for the Corvairs
Issac Gravelle made 42 saves in goal for Port in a losing cause.
Junior Canadians 6 Kilty B’s 2
Ryan scored a pair of goals as the Junior Canadians made it two in a row for the weekend with an impressive win at home over Hamilton.
Nick Kalpalis, Joey Marrese, Cooper Reid and Braden Carruthers added singles.
Stanley Mannella made 26 saves for the win.
Owen King and Kaleb Frank replied for Hamilton.
