Weekend junior B roundup: Mets win two; Corvairs close gap on second
The Fort Erie Meteors took a step in the right direction with a pair of wins in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action over the weekend.
The Meteors, who had dropped five of six, topped the Thorold Blackhawks 3-1 at home Saturday before edging the Pelham Panthers 6-5 in overtime in Pelham Sunday afternoon.
“We can’t say it was our best weekend but we’ll never complain about four points,” Meteors assistant coach Anthony Passero said. “Not playing your best and coming out with two wins on a weekend is promising.
“We are coming down the wire here and it’s time to start treating every game like a playoff game. No matter how ugly, you need the two points.”
The Mets trailed 3-2 heading into the third period in Pelham before scoring three times. The Panthers sent the game into overtime when Florian Xhekaj scored his second goal of the game on a penalty shot with 1:02 remaining.
Riley Noble then won it for Fort Erie with his sixth of the season two minutes into the extra frame.
Brendan Krawczyk and Kyle Adamo had two goals each for Fort Erie while Noble and Luke Gualtieri added singles.
Jordan Tutt, Luca Marandola and Jack Merkosky rounded out the scoring for the Panthers. Raine Hodge chipped in with three assists.
Joshua Smith earned the win in goal with an 18-save performance.
Saturday night, the Meteors broke a 1-1 tie with goals in the third period by Joshua DiFrancesco and Michael Angrilli.
Marcus Regina scored in the second for the Meteors while Liam Loftus replied for the Blackhawks.
Duncan Nichols-Delay made 25 saves for the win.
Noah Fortuna kicked out 27 shots in a losing effort.
