Weekend junior B roundup: Panthers edge Kilty B’s; Corvairs top Falcons; Sailors clip Mets
Mason Goodfellow picked the perfect time to register his first junior hat-trick.
The 17-year-old winger scored three goals in a row in a span less than 10 minutes to pace the Pelham Panthers past the Hamilton Kilty B’s 5-4 in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League game Monday afternoon in Pelham.
Goodfellow’s three goals give him 12 on the season to go along with 12 assists in 27 games since joining the Panthers from the Ontario Junior Hockey League.
“Honestly, it was a great team effort and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Goodfellow said. “Had a couple of weeks off so it was good to get back and get rolling and into the win column.”
Goodfellow, who was Barrie’s third-round selection (59th overall) in the 2023 Ontario Priority Selection, is hoping to refine his game and crack an OHL roster next season.
“Hopefully I can do some developing to be ready for next year,” Goodfellow said.
Pelham coach Zac Rinaldo said Goodfellow has the necessary offensive tools to play at the next level, it’s his work at the other end of the rink that needs attention.
“His defensive game was probably the main reason for the situation to pan out for him coming here,” Rinaldo said. “He wants to be in the OHL. The only thing that was stopping him was his D-zone, meaning paying attention to the small details inside the zone coverage. That doesn’t mean any system play, it’s just stopping on pucks, being in good shot lanes, not trying to cheat the zone for offence.
“It’s not easy to play defence, especially if you’re such an offensive player like Goody is.”
Rinaldo had Goodfellow on the ice as the Panthers held off a late charge from Hamilton.
“I felt comfortable putting him out there as he’s grown tremendously inside of the D-Zone,” Rinaldo said.
Goodfellow said he has felt comfortable in Pelham since Day 1.
“Zac, he’s a great coach and honestly it’s been amazing coming here,” Goodfellow said. “The coaching staff, the teammates, amazing.
“We’re all a brotherhood in this dressing room. I think if we keep continuing what we’re doing, we’ll make the playoffs.”
The win improved Pelham’s record to 16-22-5. They trail Branford by two points for the eighth and final playoff spot with seven games to play.
“We’re already in playoffs,” Rinaldo said. “We’ve been in playoffs since February. So the group knows, we know where we are, we know what type of brand of hockey we need to play. I would rather it be this way than any other way realistically because if you’re a top team, you can get comfortable enough and you don’t pay attention to the fine details. A team like us being so young, to identify that we are already in playoffs, when we get to playoffs we just plug and play.”
The Panthers held a 4-2 after two periods. The Kilty B’s drew to within one at 18:02 before Jack Havers scored into an empty net to restore Pelham’s two-goal lead. Hamilton then scored again at 19:16.
“It’s good for the team, good for the morale,” Rinaldo said. “We have a couple guys out of the lineup. We had (Brandon) Petrova not playing so you had some young kids in place on higher end minutes that they’re not comfortable with so it feels good for them.”
