The Pelham Panthers proved they can hang with the big boys this weekend.
The Panthers earned a point Friday in a 2-1 shootout loss at St. Catharines, then picked up their first win of the season with a 3-2 win over the Falcons Sunday afternoon in Pelham.
It was the first loss in four games for the Falcons.
“Three of four points from the defending Sutherland Cup champs,” Pelham general manager Tim Toffolo said. “Our guys played great, our goalies play great, and we had great coaching.”
Keegan Jackson had another outstanding effort in goal for the Panthers, kicking out 42 shots for the win.
Rookie Stephen Toltl made 23 saves for St. Catharines.
Zachary Cafaro and Chris Reid exchanged goals in the first period before Luca Marandola’s second of the season halfway through the second gave Pelham a 2-1 lead.
Defenceman Jason Gee netted a power-play goal early in the third to extend Pelham’s lead to 3-1. Reid’s second of the game with under a minute remaining concluded the scoring.
“Credit to Pelham for a hardfought 60 minutes,” Falcons coach Tyler Bielby said. “As a team and coaching staff, we need to be better. We will get right back to work at practice Tuesday and will be ready for our crossover games this weekend.”
