Weekend junior B roundup: Sailors break losing streak; Mets split; Falcons rebound
The Port Colborne Sailors got back on track over the weekend, picking up three of a possible four points in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, inter-conference action.
The Sailors topped the Komoka Kings 4-3 at the Komoka Wellness Centre Saturday after dropping a tough 5-4 overtime decision at home to the Strathroy Rockets Friday.
The Sailors had lost five in a row coming into the weekend.
Grayson Gare broke a 3-3 tie with his seventh of the season with just under four minutes to play to give the Sailors a much needed win. Aiden Cupelli, Dylan Pergentile and Liam Wicks also scored for the Sailors.
Tucker Adams made 32 saves to pick up the win.
Kyler Morgan netted the winner for the Rockets 2:48 into OT Friday.
Gare had two while Cupelli and Sam Tonelli also scored for Port.
Rookie Lucas Cardiff-Bilodeau, making his second start of the season, kicked out 44 shots in a losing effort.
SATURDAY
Meteors 6 Centennials 3
Blake Hall, Hunter Dickey, Caleb Bidgood, Andrew MacNiel, Hunter Coley and Liam Beamish scored for the Mets in a win over the Ayr Centennials.
Charlie Burns made 25 saves for the win.
The Meteors had a tougher time Friday in Listowel, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Cyclones.
Beamish, with two, and Coley scored for the Mets.
Burns permitted five goals on 20 shots before giving way to John Lloyd, who kicked out all 13 shots he faced.
“Roller coaster weekend for us,” Meteors general manger/coach Nik Passero said. “Don’t think we played necessarily well on Friday and Listowel punched us in the mouth a little bit.
“Our performance at home Saturday was much better which I’m happy about. We need to dominate at home in order to be a tough team to beat.”
Falcons 3 Redhawks 1
The St. Catharines Falcons rebounded from a 4-1 loss at home to London Friday with a victory at Cambridge Saturday.
“Good bounce back win on the road after a tough loss on home ice Friday,” Falcons general manager/coach Tyler Bielby said. “Thought we battled harder in our own zone and kept a lot of the play to the perimeter.
“On the flip side, I also think as a team can work harder to get to the middle of the ice in the O-zone. It’s definitely tougher to play in the guts of the zone, but it’s where games are won.”
Caleb Thompson, Treyson Dewar and Matthew Hlacar scored for St. Catharines while rookie netminder Cal Gardner made 31 saves for the win.
“Cal Gardner showed up to play and was steady through 60 minutes,” Bielby said.
Bielby said the Falcons enjoyed playing at the Galt Arena Gardens, one of the oldest operating arenas in the world and the oldest in Ontario.
“Overall we were pleased with the team’s response and would like to thank our hosts in Cambridge for a great night of hockey. It was a great experience to play at The Galt.”
Corvairs 3 Cyclones 2 OT
Brayden Russell scored three minutes into overtime to give the Caledonia Corvairs a win over the visiting Listowel Cyclones.
Jayden Lammel and Sami Douglas also scored for the Corvairs.
Keegan Jackson made 35 saves in goal for Caledonia.
SUNDAY
Kings 2 Panthers 1
Jordan Adams scored early in the first period for the Pelham Panthers which was all the offence then could muster in a 2-1 loss at home to Komoka Sunday.
Logan Slou made 40 saves in net for Pelham.
Junior Canadians 6 Bombers 3
The Welland Junior Canadians broke a 12-game losing streak with a victory over the visiting Caledon Bombers Sunday night in Welland.
