Weekend junior B roundup: Tight race for first place
It’s a tight race for first place atop the Golden Horseshoe Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Following this weekend’s action, the Niagara Falls Canucks sit atop the standings with an 8-3-1 mark and 12 points. The Hamilton Kilty B’s have the best winning percentage at .889 with eight wins in nine games while the St. Catharines Falcons also have a better winning percentage (.750) than the Canucks at 7-2-0-1.
The Caledonia Corvairs round out the top four with a 5-4-0-1 mark and 11 points.
SUNDAY
Blackhawks 4 Panthers 3
Newcomer Aydar Suniev, a 16-year-old native of Moscow, scored two goals in his debut as the visiting Thorold Blackhawks edged the Pelham Panthers.
Grayson Gare and Cooper Lobsinger also scored for the Blackhawks.
Cody Miskolczi, Jason Gee and Florian Xhekaj replied for the Panthers.
Noah Fortuna kicked out 32 saves in goal for the win.
Brayden Kelso faced 30 shots in net for the Panthers.
Canucks 5 Junior Canadians 3
The visiting Niagara Falls Canucks broke open a close game with three goals in the third to emerge with a 5-3 win at Welland.
Matthew Riva once again paced the Canucks with two goals to give him 13. Ethan Walker, Alex Campbell and Ben Felicetti also scored.
Riley George made 42 saves in net for the win.
Ethan Sharpe, Brady Afelskie and Owin Hendsbee were the Welland goal scorers.
SATURDAY
Corvairs 3 Panthers 1
Markus Dempewolf scored the winner early in the second period as the Caledonia Corvairs held off the visiting Pelham Panthers.
Calvin Crombie and Mason Mantzavrakos, into an empty net, also scored for the winners.
Jonah Devereaux scored for Pelham.
Ethan Langevin made 33 saves in goal for the win.
Kilty B’s 7 Meteors 4
The Hamilton Kilty B’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period en route to a 7-4 win at Fort Erie.
Liam Galton had two goals for the winners while singles came off the sticks of Ryan McGuire, Thomas Shain, Nolan Underwood, Dylan Abbbamont and Luke Johnston.
Antonino Pugliese had two for Fort Erie, Marcus Regina and Joseph Macchione one each.
