Weekend junior hockey roundup: IceDogs lose at Sudbury; Junior B results
The new look Niagara IceDogs are still trying to find their way.
The IceDogs, who made several major acquisitions heading up to the Ontario Hockey League trade deadline last week, dropped a 7-3 decision at Sudbury Sunday afternoon.
The IceDogs also split a pair of games last week, topping Kingston and losing to Guelph, and are now 24-10-7-2 and lead the Wolves by four points atop to Central Division.
Niagara fell behind 4-1 in the third period at Sudbury before rallying with a pair in the second to trail 4-3 after two. The Wolves then dominated the third period scoring three unanswered goals.
Akil Thomas, Kirill Maksimov and newcomer Matt Brassard scored for the IceDogs. Captain Ben Jones assisted on all three goals.
Stephen Dhillon made 23 saves and was charged with the loss.
The IceDogs are home to Hamilton Thursday and Flint Saturday and in Guelph Sunday.
JUNIOR B
Falcons 5 Regals 2
The St. Catharines Falcons bounced back after having their 10-game winning streak snapped the previous night with a win at Buffalo Saturday in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, Golden Horseshoe Conference action.
Kyle West, Andrew Somerville, James Gowland, Tanner Main and Christian Girhiny scored for the Falcons, who improved to 28-4-0-2.
Newcomer Noah Battaglia made 36 saves for the win in his debut for the Falcons. Battaglia is a former member of the Erie Otters.
The Falcons, who dropped a 4-1 decision at home Friday to the Hamilton Kilty B’s, are one point behind the Niagara Falls Canucks for first place.
The Falcons are home to the Canucks Friday in a showdown for first place.
Canucks 6 Meteors 2
The Canucks stayed atop the standings with a victory at Fort Erie Saturday.
Justin Kyle, Ben Evans, Luke McFarlane, Matthew Riva, David D’Agostino and newcomer Nicholas Prestia scored for the Canucks.
Brannon Butler and Luca Mazzo replied for the Meteors.
The Canucks are in Hamilton Monday.
Panthers 10 Junior Canadians 2
Wyatt Thole collected three goals and captain Thomas Young two as the Pelham Panthers defeated the Welland Junior Canadians Sunday night in Welland.
Jackson Barrett, Matt Ruigrok, Devin Sanders, Brendan Charlton and Noah Caperchione added singles.
The Panthers improved to 22-13-0-2.
Matthew Maidens and Dryden Rivet replied for the Junior Canadians, who fell to 8-24-0-3.
