Westlane’s athletic award winners

Christina Grimo was named Westlane’s senior female athlete of the year.

Christina Grimo and Aaron Nguyen were named Westlane Secondary School’s senior female and male athletes of the year.

Winning junior athlete of the year honours were Jordan Nguyen and Amy Edwards

Leslie and Neslie Ombao were the female winners of the Spartan Spirit and Athletics Award and Isaiah Vanegas was the male winner.

“Thank you to all of our coaches for volunteering your time and effort and thank you to our supporting staff members and custodians who work behind the scenes to help maintain our playing facilities,” wrote Shonesee Devereux, Westlane’s program leader of health and physical education. “To our Spartan athletes, thank you for your hard work and dedication to sport. Our school motto of ‘Success Despite Adversity’ couldn’t ring more true as we continue to move forward together while adapting to our current global circumstances.”

Golf: Lucas Pearson, MVP.

Tennis: Emily Crane, MVP

Ultimate: Mikayla Arnold and Kayla Zytaruk, spirit awards; Chase McKernan, Long Bomb.

Junior girls basketball: Amy Edwards and Vivian Nguyen, MVPs.

Senior boys volleyball: Marko Zivkovic, offensive MVP; Kevin Del Vecchio, defensive MVP.

Cheerleading: Ashley Herrera, best spirit.

Junior boys football: Chris Pettorossi, offensive MVP; Michael Grimo, defensive MVP.

Senior boys football: Isaiah Vanegas and Jeffrey Vujovic, MVPs.

Cross country: Abby Jackson and Aidan Bilon, outstanding runners.

Curling: Ben Rogers, MVP.

Boys hockey: Tyler Proppe, MVP; Isaiah Vanegas, coach’s award.

Junior boys basketball: Jordan Nguyen, MVP; Thomas Woodruff, rookie of the year.

Senior boys basketball: Waleed Al Basha, MVP; Jacob Firlotte, rookie of the year.

Junior girls volleyball: Vivan Nguyen, offensive MVP; Sydney Pritchard, defensive MVP.

Senior girls volleyball: Christina Grimo, offensive MVP; Deanna Barnes, defensive MVP.

Amy Edwards, junior female athlete of the year.

Bernie Puchalski, a graduate of Brock University and Niagara College, worked in journalism in Niagara for more than 27 years before taking a voluntary buyout from The Standard at the end of 2016. He started his career as a news reporter for the Niagara Falls Review before switching to sports reporting. He was a sports reporter and sports editor at the Niagara Falls Review before joining the Standard's sports department in 1996. He was named the Standard's sports editor in 2000 and became the regional sports editor, in charge of the Niagara Falls Review, Welland Tribune and Standard, in 2015, a position he held until he left the company. During his time in newspapers, he was a multiple winner and finalist for numerous Ontario and Western Ontario Newspaper Awards for sports reporting, spot news reporting and humour writing. He was a member of the Standard Boys Basketball Tournament committee and co-chair of the Standard Girls Basketball Tournament, helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for bursaries presented to participants in the tournament. He also served on countless local sports committees both in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.
