Winning weekend for Generals
The Niagara Generals peewee football team snapped a two-game losing streak in Ontario Summer Football League action with a hard-fought 24-16 win over the Guelph Gryphons.
“Together the U12 Niagara Generals worked as a team and when this happens they are a very hard team to beat. Coming off that two-game losing streak, this was a much-needed win which secures a playoff spot for them,” Niagara coach Cliff Miller said. “Hats off to Guelph for coming out and competing and keeping us on our toes. Moving forward, I think that the boys will start to gel better and make a huge run in the playoffs.”
Ronin Weins had a great day for the Generals with 200 rushing yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Layken Crawford was back to form with nine attempts for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
“The dynamic duo came up clutch when the team needed to score after the game was tied 16-16 late in the fourth quarter,” Miller said.
Liam Cook also had big contributions on defence with four tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.
ATOM GENERALS 58 PEEL 38
The Niagara Generals atom football team rode an offensive explosion to a 58-38 victory over the Peel Panthers last Sunday.
The Generals led 30-18 at the half and never looked back. In the second half, the game continued to go back and forth with the Generals coming up with the win.
“From an offensive prospective, I was very happy with the execution of all our plays,” coach Andrew Lewis said. “Today was all about our offence executing on its blocks, running our sweeps with authority and our pass game was excellent.”
The defence struggled to contain the outside runs by Peel.
“We allowed their quarterback to break out of the pocket and failed to execute on our tackles,” he said.
With the victory, the Generals concluded the regular season with an impressive 5-1 record.
“I know I speak for all the coaches when I say how proud we are of this team so far this year. All the kids have made a great improvement and really challenged themselves. We look forward to preparing for the upcoming playoffs,” Lewis said.
Leading the Generals attack was Christian Lewis who had more than 250 rushing yards and two majors to claim player of the game honours. Jorge Corredor-Reyes also had a productive day with a pair of touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown.
