The St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves reached across the border to fill the vacant head coaching position with their League2 women’s team.
Greg Margolis, a 35-year-old Massachusetts native, has been hired to take over for Rob Lalama and is looking forward to the opportunity.
“I sat down with them a couple times to talk about what their aspirations are for that new team and just sounded like a really great opportunity,” Margolis said. “It kind of came together really well.
“I’m really excited.”
Margolis completed his fourth season at the helm of the Buffalo State women’s soccer program in 2024, leading the Bengals to their most wins and first playoff berth since 2016. The Bengals got off to the best start in program history in 2023, with a 5-0-1 record through the first six games.
Tryouts for the L2 and U20 women’s teams will be held Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. outdoors at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland which will give Margolis a chance to see in person what he will have to work with.
“I think part of it, the time from now until the first game of the year, is about learning a little bit about the landscape in Canada and how the system operates,” he said. “I think what’s going to be good is I’ll be able to get working with the potential team pretty quickly and get to know them pretty well before we have ourselves anywhere near the first game of the year, which will be fun.
“I don’t think style of play or any of that will be anything different. It’ll just be getting myself comfortable in a different environment.”
Club Roma general manager of soccer operations Mark Bolton is thrilled to have Margolis on board.
“He’s a very impressive younger coach and we’re very excited about having him,” Bolton said. “Greg was just a really good candidate for us and we’re just excited to continue on that path that we had built from what we did last year.”
Margolis has a long and impressive coaching resume, started his coaching journey at Springfield College with the men’s team which won the conference championship, two regional championships and went to the NCAA tournament. He also worked at a few other Division III institutions in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and then got his first head coaching job at Elmira College in New York where he was the men’s and women’s head coach before taking over at Buffalo State in 2021.
Bolton has high expectations for the women’s program this season as Roma will also be fielding U20 women’s team reserve team for the first time.
“I’m very excited about this upcoming season,” he said. “After what happened with the men’s program last year, we’re hoping that this year we might be able to draw from that and then focus a little more on the women’s program as well.”
