Wolves bring back centre-back
Conrad Czarnecki is on a mission.
The 23-year-old centre-back has returned to the St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves with one thing in mind.
“I’m here to help and I’m here to help Roma win games,” the Brock University student said. “There’s no other alternative.
“I didn’t come here to lose.”
Czarnecki played with Roma previously before moving to North Toronto last season where he excelled.
“It was my best season, I think, ever,” Czarnecki said. “I had a great coach there. Phenomenal team, phenomenal guys. Excellent season. And now I’m here.”
Czarnecki feels the time is right to return to the Wolves after a memorable 2024 season that saw them win nine of their last 10 games to earn promotion to the Premier Division of League1 in 2025.
“I think culture,” Czarnecki said when asked about the return. “I think what has been built over the past year here and the turnaround two seasons ago from now, it’s pretty extraordinary and that’s probably the biggest pull for why I want to come back.
“I just want to be a part of something bigger than myself for sure.”
Czarnecki watched the Wolves from across the field last season and could sense a change.
“I was definitely surprised with, again, more of the culture side, how well it went, how many people were coming out supporting from the city,” he said. “In terms of them turning the season around and winning, I would say I’m not surprised. The character on that team and the leaders in that team, there’s no one else that could have done it besides them. Knowing them personally, some of those guys, if it was anyone to do it, it was going to be them.”
Club Roma general manager of soccer operations Mark Bolton is thrilled to have Czarnecki back.
“He knows what we’re trying to do and the path we’re trying to take,” Bolton said. “So because of the culture change that we’ve had over the last year or so, he decided that this was going to be a good move for him.”
Czarnecki grew up in Hamilton and played minor soccer all over Ontario. He played professionally in Poland, turning pro when he was 18, before returning to Canada.
Czarnecki says his biggest attribute is his relentless pursuit of the ball.
“Over the past few years, a few top coaches have really helped me to become better at the ball, on the ball,” he said. “I would say defensively, in the air, one-on-one, defending, and the hunger to get the ball back. For some reason, I just have something in me where I need to get that ball back.”
Czarnecki, who is studying sports management and business, has ventured into business world, co-founding Peak Football Performance (PFP) with fellow Roma players Michael Fernandez and Sean Darracott.
“It is something we wanted to start in this region to give back,” Czarnecki said. “We’ve been here for a while and we see what this region needs in terms of youth football coming up to the adult level. We feel like it needs a lot of help and we are three people that wish that when we were younger at that age, could teach what we have been taught. We want to teach this to these kids and to this youth so that they can excel. They can do whatever they want with their soccer careers and we can take all these kids to the next level.”
Bolton loves the idea.
“It’s full circle. I know what these guys can give back, and these kids are all just going to benefit from the fact that they’re willing to do what they’re doing. So I’m really proud of these guys.”
