Wolves come up just short in Markham
The St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves aren’t the least bit discouraged after losing their second game in a row.
Roma dropped a 2-1 decision to Alliance United to fall to 2-3 in League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division action Sunday in Markham, but Wolves director of operations Carmine Provenzano remains upbeat.
“If you asked me at the beginning of the season what our goals were I would have said to be competitive and to grow as a team,” he said. “I think we’ve done both.
“I think teams who thought they were going to get an easy three points from us are re-thinking that a little bit.”
The Wolves fell behind 1-0 at about the 30-minute mark of the first half.
“We came out pretty well but a little error defending caused a one-on-one for the keeper and it was very difficult at that point,” Provenzano said. “Other than that, we pulled up our socks and played really, really well the rest of the game. To me, Alliance kind of parked the bus a little bit and were kind of nervous with our attack.”
The Wolves finally got on the scoreboard when Gianluca DelPriore scored off a corner kick later in the half.
“It was a tremendous strike off the post and into the net. It was a tremendous volley. He lost his man and give himself a little bit of space,” Provenzano said.
The Wolves continued to hold an edge in play in the second half, Provenzano said.
“We made some adjustments defensively. They were on their heels until the red when they picked it up a little bit, but they did not have a lot of opportunities on their end. We took the game to them and didn’t capitalize on all our chances but that’s the game.”
Alliance netted the winner with about five minutes remaining on a penalty kick following a red card.
“It was a tough one,” Provenzano said.
The Wolves are home Friday, Aug. 20 to play London at 8:45 p.m.
