Wolves make it seven in a row
It is no coincidence the St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves have been playing their best soccer of the season since the arrival of Ethan Miskolczi.
The 22-year-old Welland native started the season with the Oakville Blue Devils but returned to Roma just ahead of the League1 roster freeze deadline.
The Wolves defeated North Mississauga 4-1 Friday night at home for their seventh straight win with Miskolczi in the lineup.
“It was just the right decision for me (to come back) and I’m glad I made that decision,” Miskolczi said. “Ever since I’ve been back we’ve been on a win streak. It’s been great.”
Miskolczi has provided an experienced presence at centre-back, something the Wolves were in dire need of.
“He’s plays with a lot of confidence and brings the confidence of the defenders very high,” Roma coach Federico Turriziani said. “He’s very good on the high balls, very fast. It was something we were missing at the beginning of the season and we fixed the problems on the back and now feel we are complete and very competitive.
“We are very happy to have him on board.”
Miskolczi, who played with the Wolves in 2021 and 2022, was amazed at the difference at Rinaldi Field and at the club itself.
“The first time I came back here for one of the practices I had to take a walk around. It was all new and the pitch looks better, new scoreboard. Everything looks amazing,” he said. “It just shows professionalism and it shows you’re in a professional environment where you feel more confident.”
On the field, the Notre Dame graduate picked up right where he left off.
“It’s amazing, honestly. I love the atmosphere, the team the culture, the amount of practices we have each week. I just love being part of this team.”
Miskolczi measures his worth to the team by his defensive play.
“Winning one-on-one battles is very satisfying,” he said. “Most of the time it’s about not letting them get scoring opportunities or just trying to force them to the line and away from the goal or just blocking a shot,” he said. “Most of the time it’s staying very compact and forcing the ball to the outside.”
Miskolczi, who is working on his Master’s of Research and playing soccer at Brock, would love to continue to play at a competitive level as long as possible.
“Hopefully I can take it a step further, go above and beyond League1, maybe get back in the Premier League. Hopefully we can get promoted and then go from there,” he said.
Victor Kariuki, Nicolas Andreola, Gianluca Del Priore and Luca Ragagnin scored for the Wolves, who improved to 8-5-2 overall.
The Wolves have four games remaining in the regular season — Aug. 2 at Darby, August 10 at Toronto TFC and home to Unionville Milliken Friday, August 16.
“For sure we don’t want to stop winning but we also know it’s very hard,” Turriziani said. “Our focus is to win every game. Right now it’s to do our best every night.”
